11. Let us now, therefore, turn back to what is much more properly the subject of our enquiry-the testimony of the Greek writers: where we shall have the consolation to see, that no other interpretation than your's was ever heard in all the Greek churches*.

We deserted these writers, after having quoted a passage from a homily falsely ascribed to St. Athanasius. The next name on my list, is that of Basil the Great: But as my knowledge of his having quoted the words in question, is derived from Anastasius Sinaita; and as I do not find in Basil this quotation, where I am directed to look for it, we will pass by this authority for the present, and take it up from Anastasius, when we come to him in his order.

Let us see, therefore, what Chrysostom shall say.

* Had I been able, I should undoubtedly have been disposed to have consulted, on these texts, the several ancient versions, oriental and others though it would have been, in some degree, an infringement on the simplicity of our argument. They might probably have afforded us some aid in illustrating and confirming. For instance, on the present example Mill tells us, that the Ethiopic and Arabic versions render the clause in the sense of "the Christ and God" (Christi Dei). But, the originals of those versions being far beyond my depth, I was not willing to appeal to their Latin translations: because, it is well known, that they are not always to be depended upon; and particularly because, for our present purpose, being usually very literal, they would still probably leave us in doubt (from the lack of the article) whether the Greek idiom were, or were not expressed in the original.-After all, the versions could only be of a very second-rate importance.

(De Incomprehensibili Dei Natura, Homil. 5. vol. i. p. 483.) This is sufficiently express,

12. The passage is quoted again by Chrysostom, (Homil. in loc. vol. xi. p. 126) but without determining any thing for our purpose.

The words which comprise the little that he gives there of direct interpretation on the passage, are at the begin ning of the Homily, and stand thus.

Neither is there any thing to be gathered from the remainder of the homily.

13. The two following passages of Asterius are equally indeterminate.

(Asterii Homil. ii. in Psalm 5. apud Cotelerii Eccles. Græcæ Monumenta, vol. ii. p. 18.)

(Ibid. p. 50. Homil. in psal. 6.)

15. We shall meet with better success in Cyrillus Alexandrinus. In his Thesaurus (under the title Εκλο και ρητων μετα συλλογισμών εκ της καινῆς διαθήκης, ότι

Θεος κατα φυσιν ὁ υἱος, ει δε τουτο, οὐ ποίημα, ουδε κτισ μα—see p. 267) after quoting the verse he immediately continues: Ιδου παλιν Χριστον ονόμασας ευθυς αυτον εισα Φέρει και Θεόν, ὡς του Θεου και Πατρος εν αυτῳ βασιλευοντος, αυτού τε αυ πάλιν εν τῷ Πατρι.

16. Again, in the sixth of the Dialogues de Trinitate (vol. v. p. 611. Α. και ζωη μεν η φως, ουκ ετι. Τις ουν αν είη λοιπον ἡ του υἱου φυσις, θεότητος τε και βασιλείας, και του είναι φως απήμφιεσ μένη, και ζωοποιειν ουκ έχουσα το ζωης τητώμενον ; Cyril is in this passage employed in refuting the objection which is made to the original dignity of Christ's person,

person, from the circumstance of St. Paul's speaking of his delivering up “ the kingdom to God, even the Father.” (1 Cor. xv. 24.) To remove this objection, and to shew that Christ's kingdom shall have no end, he argues that St. Paul, in this passage to the Ephesians applies the name of God to Christ, on account of that dominion. If then he shall cease to be king, he will be no longer God: neither can he be any more the everlasting light and life. The whole reasoning, therefore, is built upon this supposition, that Christ is here called God.

(Vol. v. part ii. p. 7. of the Epistles.) This is the passage which we have already seen cited in Alcuin (No. 10 above.)

18. From the two following examples, which will finish what I have to say at present upon Cyril, I will not pretend to claim more, than that it should be granted that they contain nothing contrary to your interpretation.

The first is in the Thesaurus, under the title "Οτι βασιλεύς εστιν ὁ του Θεου υἱος. But as this is merely a transcript
