room a very few flowers, rather of a large kind, and detached, such as full-blown roses, camelias, &c. &c. Blouse caps for the morning have very long lappets; if their texture is thin, they are lined with coloured sarcenet, or satin. White crape dress hats, adorned either with flowers or feathers, form the favourite head-dress of our matrons at all the fêtes champetres. It is expected that the Madras turban will be revived this winter for home costume: there never was an undress coeffure more becoming; but it lost its attraction from being almost proverbially common.

The parasols this summer were all lined with a colour suitable to the parasol itself, though strikingly different; such as pale pink with brown, straw colour with purple, &c. Their reign, however, with that of white dresses, is now almost ȧt an end. The favourite colours are blue of all shades, walnut-tree brown, light olive green, pink, geranium, and violet.

OR MONTHLY COMPENDIUM OF FOREIGN COSTUME.

By a Parisian Correspondent.

COSTUME OF PARIS.

There is something of a dearth now prevailing in our good city of Paris, in regard to fashions: the fathers and husbands rejoice at this; since Madame l'épouse, and Mademoiselle la chere fille, do not call so often on their purses for a fresh supply. Yet our females are not quite reduced to despair, for the want of new modes; they have adopted simplicity in their attire, it is true, but that simplicity is expensive as it is novel.

At

two round capes and a square collar, are adopted by ladies of high fashion. the public spectacles young ladies are often seen with a handkerchief of India muslin over their shoulders, the double points falling behind one above the other, and the ends before fastened down under the sash. This simplicity has something of a dowdy appearance, especially as it is worn over a blouse. The muslin and Organdy canezous are made with or without sleeves, || according to fancy; when they have sleeves they are long, very wide, and very much stiffened.

Pelerines of muslin, fastening behind, and trimmed round the border with very broad lace set on full, and above the lace a row of splendid embroidery: a lace frill || stands up at the throat, confined by a bow of coloured striped ribbon. This out-door article is entirely new, and when the weather is mild is the favourite covering over a high dress. Canezous of Organdy still continue in high favour, particularly over dresses of Scotch tartan; and muslin mantles, richly embroidered, with

Among the new bonnets is a white gros d'été, with a full quilling at the edge of tulle; this bonnet is surmounted by a beautiful plume of marabouts, bending towards the crown, at the base of which are the eyes of the peacock's tail. Some hats of white gros de Naples are trimmed with ribbons of different shades. Dress hats are of pink gauze, with a bouquet formed of roses and geraniums: part of this bouquet stands up on on one side of the crown, the other falls to the right, over the brim. White gauze hats have only three purple auriculas placed on them, or three large peonies, blue, white, and yellow this last is the newest sort of fancy hat. Riding hats are small and round, of black beaver. Chip hats are numerous; generally ornamented with rose coloured marabouts, and the brim lined with a broad rose-coloured ribbon : the brims of the hats for walking are all very large: when flowers are placed in hats they almost cover the crown; they are of various kinds, and generally have ivy mingled among them. If the hat or bonnet is white, so ornamented, it is bound with shaded green ribbon. Close bonnets for the morning are of silk; the favourite colour, café à la crême, or some such unobtrusive tint. The Leghorn hats are very large, and generally ornamented with white feathers à l'Inca.

Cambric gowns, with two rows of puckered muslin at the border, prevail much in the country: these dresses are made partially high, but they surround the bust like a drawn frock; the sleeves are en gigot, and are confined at the wrist by a broad gold bracelet. A printed muslin dress is also greatly admired; the
