[The above acts of Congress are designated in the margin of the ensuing part of this collection, not only by their respective date, but also by Roman figures shewing the Congress during which the act was passed, and by the number, in common figures, of the act (or chapter) itself. As there is a distinct series of chapters for each session of the first and second Congress, the number of the session is also added to the acts passed during that period. But, for each subsequent Congress there is but one series of chapters embracing all the sessions held during such Congress. Thus the marginal figures II. 1st 19. designate the 19th chapter of the acts passed during the first session of the second Congress, which, by reference to the preceding table, will be found to be the "act for ascertaining the bounds of a tract of land purchased by John Cleves Symmes:" And the marginal figures IV. 29. designate the 29th chapter of the acts passed during the fourth Congress, which is the "act providing for the sale of the lands of the United States, in the territory north west of the river Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river."]
