(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 80 or more persons in both sexes reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.]

[blocks in formation]

The above table shows that of a total of 1,716 persons the largest proportion are under 6, while slightly smaller proportions are from 6 to 13, 20 to 29, and 30 to 44, and the smallest proportion are 14 and 15 years of age.

As regards the several foreign-born races it will be seen that the Lithuanians show the largest proportion of males, while the Germans show the smallest proportion, in the under 6 group. The Bohemians and Moravians show the largest proportion of males, while the Lithua

nians show the smallest proportion, in the 6 to 13 group. The Germans show the largest proportion of males, while the Irish show the smallest proportion, in the 14 and 15 group. The Bohemians and Moravians show the largest proportion of males, while the Lithuanians show the smallest proportion, in the 16 to 19 group. The Poles show the largest proportion of females, while the Germans show the smallest proportion, in the 20 to 29 group. The Irish show the largest proportion of females, and the Poles the smallest proportion, in the 30 to 44 group. The Germans show the largest, and the Poles the smallest proportion of females, in the 45 or over group.

The table next presented shows the per cent of the male employees within each age group according to general nativity and race:

Of the 4,607 male employees for whom information was secured none are under 14 years of age, 10.3 per cent are from 14 to 19, 18.8 per cent are from 20 to 24, 18.8 per cent are from 25 to 29, and 13.6 per cent are from 30 to 34. In the group of employees from 35 to 44 years of age the proportion is 20.1 per cent, 12.9 per cent are from 45 to 54, and 5.6 per cent are 55 years of age or over. In the groups of employees from 14 to 19 and from 20 to 24 years of age, employees who are native-born of foreign father show the highest per cent, followed by native-born whites of native father. In the groups of employees from 25 to 29 years of age and from 35 to 44 years of age

the native-born negroes of native father show the greatest proportion, followed in the order mentioned by the foreign-born, the native-born whites of native father, and the native-born of foreign father. Of employees who are from 45 to 54 years of age the foreign-born show the highest per cent, followed by the native-born negroes of native father, the native-born whites of native father, and employees who are native-born of foreign father, in the order mentioned. Of males who are 55 years of age or over, the foreign-born employees show the highest per cent, closely followed by the native-born whites of native father, while the native-born negroes of native father and the nativeborn of foreign father, having the same percentage, show smaller proportions.

Of employees who are native-born of foreign father, those whose fathers were born in Austria-Hungary show the highest per cent in the groups from 14 to 19 and from 20 to 24 years of age. Employees whose fathers were born in Germany show the highest per cent from 20 to 29 years of age. In the age groups from 30 to 34, 35 to 44, 45 to 54, and 55 or over employees whose fathers were born in Ireland show the highest per cent, and those whose fathers were born in Austria-Hungary a low per cent.

Of employees of foreign birth the Roumanians and Russians show the highest per cent and the Germans and Irish the lowest per cent who are from 14 to 19 years of age. In the age groups from 20 to 24 and from 25 to 29, immigrants from southern and eastern Europe show a considerably larger proportion than those from northern Europe. Employees who are from 30 to 34 years of age show the Japanese having the highest per cent and the Swedish the lowest. The Swedish and Danish employees show the highest per cent who are from 35 to 44, and the Irish and Danish the highest per cent who are from 45 to 54, and German and Irish 55 years of age or over. The table further shows that few of the races of recent immigration show large proportions in the groups of older employees.

GENERAL PROGRESS AND ASSIMILATION.

OWNERSHIP OF HOMES.

Reference has already been made to the pronounced tendency exhibited by certain races in South Omaha to purchase their homes. In the following table the number and per cent of the families studied owning homes in the community is shown by general nativity and race of head of family:

TABLE 315.-Number and per cent of families owning home, by general nativity and race of head of family.

Upon information secured in this locality concerning 341 households it will be seen that 59.2 per cent own homes; also that the proportion of foreign-born is very much greater than that of the native-born.

As between the several foreign-born races, there is no very great difference in the proportions owning homes-the Bohemians and Moravians reporting the largest, or 70.5 per cent, and the Poles the smallest proportion, or 55.2 per cent. The Germans and Lithuanians, reporting equal proportions, follow the Bohemians and Moravians, and in turn are followed by the Irish, who report a slightly larger proportion owning homes than do the Poles.

Of the native-white families studied in this locality only 28.2 per cent own homes, a proportion very much lower than that of any other race for which information was secured.
