PREFACE.

HE very generous reception of the "Little Sunbeam," as well as the favor manifested by the public toward the other productions of the author, and the increasing and continued demand for new Sunday-School music, has induced him to prepare "THE SILVER SPRAY." The hymns and tunes in this volume, both old and new, have been selected and prepared with much care, not only with regard to their real excellence, but to promote the happiness and salvation of the young. It is believed they will be found not only pleasing and attractive, but free from all unhallowed associations, and full of Gospel truth. Most of the hymns have been prepared expressly for this work. Particular attention is invited to the Duets and Chants. Also to "If I come to Jesus," page 5; "Jesus by the Sea," page 8; "Children Sing," page 9; "The Pilgrim Journey," page 12; "More Like Jesus," page 15; "Do the Right," page 21; "Over on the Other Side," page 27; "Happy Sunday-School," page 29; "Waiting by the River," page 34; "The Land of Promise," page 51; "Beautiful Vale of Rest," page 54; "So do I," page 62; "Old, Old Story," page 67; "Lambs of the Upper Fold,” page 68; "Work, for the Night is Coming," page 72; "Tried and True," page 89; "The Port of Peace," page 95; "Leave me with Jesus," page 121; "We'll give our Hearts to Jesus," page 111; and "What shall I do with Jesus?

page 52.

It is believed that every song will be found to be a gem. Superintendents and Choristers, who wish for new and popular music for their Sabbath-Schools, with good and true words, whose fresh, pure character can not but commend them, are invited to give the "SILVER SPRAY" a hearing, feeling confident it will meet a want long felt in this department of Sunday-School labor.

Our grateful acknowledgments are due to Messrs. BRADBURY, PERKINS, LOWRY, and others, for very choice contributions to this work.

Hoping that, through the smiles and blessings of the Master, the SILVER SPRAY may prove an instrument of great good in the Sunday-School, Social Meetings, and Home Circle, and be the means of leading many precious souls" to the feet of Jesus," who shall "Sing a New Song" of “Thanksgiving," and be among the happy number who shall be gathered with the "Lambs of the Upper Fold," this little work is sent forth upon its mission.

Sol-diers for Jesus, Soldiers for Jesus, Sol-diers for Jesus We will be.

3 Onward, still onward, our way pursue,
Working with zeal and courage, too,
Bearing with patience the ills we meet-
'Tis grief that makes every joy more sweet.

Soldiers for Jesus, etc.
