INTRODUCTION.

Among the many daily Text Books already in circulation, I am not aware of one containing only those portions of the Old and New Testaments, referring especially to Christ Jesus. To collect at different times THOSE prophecies of the Old Testament relating to our Saviour, and to discover their fulfilments in the Gospels, I have found a most profitable and pleasing employment, and not unfrequently of considerable service in combating the specious but futile arguments of those who denied the Divinity and office of the Redeemer; and I can most conscientiously affirm, that if those passages which I have brought forward, have not, in all cases, convinced my opponents of their error, they have certainly impressed my mind more strongly with the truth of the Christian Faith. I wish it to be noticed particularly, that the fulfilments have been in every instance taken from the Gospels. This I have done, in the first place, to shew the inseparable connexion existing between the Prophets and Evangelists; and, secondly, because most of those prophecies were fulfilled in the earthly career of our blessed Lord, thereby unquestionably proving that "we have" indeed "found Him of whom Moses, in the law and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

INTRODUCTION.

As a book for schools, and especially to persons engaged in Scriptural teaching, I trust this little work may prove of service; for, I have found from experience, that children and those indeed of mature age, have more readily, and certainly more lastingly retained those passages of the Old Testament relative to our Saviour, when they have been enabled to note the corresponding passages in the New Testament.

In arranging the texts for daily use, I have apportioned a Gospel to each quarter of the year; but, as many may wish to commit to memory a page each day, I have placed upwards of 100 additional texts at the end of this work.

In conclusion, it is my earnest prayer, that God the Father, "who so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." God the Son, "that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father." God the Holy Ghost, by whose inspiration "all Holy Scripture is given "-The Triune Jehovah, the one God of our faith, may so bless this little work, that it may at least, in some cases, be the means of strengthening the weak, confirming the wavering, and convincing the sceptic, the Atheist, and the infidel, that the religion of Jesus is no cunningly devised fable."

St. Matthew.

JANUARY 1.

GENESIS xii. 3.

In thee, (Abraham) shall all families of the earth be blessed.

MATTHEW i. 1.

Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham.

E. N. H OARE.

I love the Lord, mighty to save;
I love him, my Shepherd and King;
I love him, because he once gave
His soul as an offering for sin.
I'll praise him, because it's his due,
Who suffered and died on the tree;
Because of his love ever new,

Which still is extended to me.

We'll praise him because of his love,
Which plucked us as brands from the
flame;

We'll praise him, because we still prove,
His love to be ever the same.

We'll trust him, in life and in death,
We'll trust him, in trouble and joy;
And oh, that we may our last breath,
In singing his praises employ!

JEREMIAH xxxi. 32.

How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the Lord hath created a new thing, a woman shall compass a man.

MATTHEW i. 13.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

MILMA N.

Thou wert born of woman! thou didst come, O Holiest to this world of sin and gloom, Not in thy dread omnipotent array;

And not by thunders strewed was thy tempestuous road;

Nor indignation burnt before thee on thy way. But thee, a soft and naked child.

Thy mother undefiled,

In the rude manger laid to rest

From off her virgin breast.
