HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

In accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the state of Illinois, the twentieth General Assembly of said state convened, in their first session, at the state house, in the city of Springfield, on Monday, the fifth day of January, A. D. 1857.

On motion of Mr. Preston,
The House was called to order, and

On motion of Mr. Logan,
Hon. John Dougherty, of Union county, was appointed chairman, pro tem.

On motion of Mr. Logan,
J. L. McConnel, of Morgan county, was chosen clerk, pro lem., and W. D.
Latshaw, of Edgar, assistant clerk, pro tem.

On motion of Mr Sparks,
Teris Greathouse, of Fayette, was appointed sergeant-at-arms, pro tem.

On motion of Mr. Logan, Samuel Hunt, of Morgan, J. W. Singleton, of Adams, and Cloyd Crouch, were appointed assistant sergeants-at-arms.

On motion of Mr. Roman, it was Resolved, That the House now proceed to call the roll, alphabetically, and to receive certificates of election from such members as may appear to be in attendance.

Whereupon, the following members appeared and answered to their names, and were qualified by Hon. Edwin Beecher, one of the circuit judges of the state of Illinois, and took their seats, viz:

First District. Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties—John DOUGHERTY.
Second-Pope, Hardin and Massac-WESLEY SLOAN.
Third-Williamson and Johnson-Thomas JONES.
Fourth-Gallatin and Saline-E. C. INGERSOLL.
Fifib-Franklin and Jackson-Joux A. LOGAN.
Sixth-Randolph-James H. Watt.
Seventh-Washington and Perry-H. S. OZBURN.
