PREFACE.

To all who have permitted me to insert in this compilation Hymns of which they were the authors, translators, or publishers, I render hearty thanks. Amongst such I may mention the Very Rev. the Dean of Canterbury, the Very Rev. the Dean of St. Paul's, the Ven. the Archdeacon of Westminster, the Rev. John Keble, M.A., the Rev. J. M. Neale, M.A., the Rev. J. F. Thrupp, M.A., Miss Winkworth, Messrs. Longman, Messrs. Bell and Daldy, and the Editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern.

The reason that I have ventured to add another Hymnal to the many already in existence is simply that my Congregation and myself desired a greater variety of Psalms and Hymns than we have in use at present, and that I could find no collection which would supply our want in this respect, and would at the same time enable us to retain many Hymns that have long been favourites amongst

us.

May the Author of all good help us to sing His praise and do His will on earth, that we may join the chorus of the multitude whose voices, like the sound of many waters, resound with celestial hallelujahs in the courts of Heaven!

[blocks in formation]

TOW blest is he who ne'er consents

H By ill advice to walk,

Nor stands in sinners' ways, nor sits
Where men profanely talk.

But makes the perfect law of God
His business and delight;
Devoutly reads therein by day,
And meditates by night.

Like some fair tree, which, fed by streams,

With timely fruit does bend,

He still shall flourish, and success

All his designs attend.

For God approves the just man's ways,
To happiness they tend;

But sinners, and the paths they tread,
Shall both in ruin end.

PSALM III. C. M.

Ton Thee my hopes rely;

HOU, gracious Lord, art my defence;

Thou art my glory, and shalt yet
Lift up my head on high.
