swerving duty; oh let us pray and strive to walk in "the light of life;" a light which will deepen and broaden and gather in all rays of sunset sadness and absorb all the dawn upon the mountains, till it burst into the full flood of day when night is banished--into the splendor, the searching peaceful splendor, of the everlasting morning when "sorrow and sighing shall flee away!" W. J. KNOX-LITTLE, “THE LIght of Life.”

So great are the joys of heaven that all the arithmeticians of the earth cannot number them nor the most learned in the world explicate them; the just shall rejoice in what is above them, which is the vision of God; in what is below them, which is the beauty of heaven and the blessed souls; in what is within them, which is the glorification of their bodies; in what is with them, which is the company of angels and men made perfect; God shall feast all their senses with unspeakable delight, for he shall be their object, and shall be a mirror to the sight, music to the ear, sweetness to the taste, balsam

to the smell, flowers to the touch; there shall be the clear light of summer, the pleasantness of the spring, the abundance of autumn, and the repose of winter.-JEREMY TAYLOR.

"From glory unto glory!"

even here

Thank God that

The starry words are shining out, our heavenward way to cheer!

That e'en among the shadows the conquering brightness glows,

As ever from the nearing light intenser radiance flows.

"From glory unto glory!" Shall the grand progression fail

When the darkling glass is shattered as we pass within the veil?

Shall the joyous song of "Onward!" at once for

ever cease,

And the swelling music culminate in monotone of peace?

Shall the fuller life be sundered at the portal of its bliss

From the principle of growth entwined with every nerve of this?

Shall the holy law of progress be hopelessly re

pealed,

And the moment of releasing see our sum of glory sealed?

[blocks in formation]

"From glory unto glory" of loveliness and light, Of music and of rapture, of power and of sight, "From glory unto glory" of knowledge and of love,

Shall be the joy of progress awaiting us above.

"From glory unto glory," with no limit and no

veil,

With wings that cannot weary and hearts that cannot fail;

Within, without, no hindrance, no barrier as we soar,

And never interruption to the endless "more and more."

For infinite outpourings of Jehovah's love and grace,

And infinite unveilings of the brightness of his

face,

And infinite unfoldings of the splendor of his will,

Meet the mightiest expansions of the finite spirit still.

F. R. HAVERGAL, "UNDER THE SHADOW."

There is a difficulty in the way of attaching a definite meaning to many of the expressions which the divine Spirit has employed in speaking of the inheritance of the saints in light. They may be literal, and then they would show that the future state will be characterized by many things which belong to the present condition of man. Or they may be figurative; and if so, then a question arises as to the extent to which they are to be regarded as representing a state corresponding with the things by which they are described. But whatever method of interpretation may be employed in order to ascertain

the meaning of some terms which are now to be mentioned, this thought will remain unquestioned, that they suggest not unceasing repose, but activity, and not unbroken united worship only, but also occupation, work to be done for God.

There are many mansions, or more strictly abodes; there are everlasting habitations; there is a city which He hath prepared for them; and St. John in his vision saw the holy city coming down from God out of heaven, saw its foundations and its walls and its gates, its streets and its river, and its tree with healing leaves and bearing monthly fruits; the inhabitants are God's servants and his people, and his tabernacle is with them. This suggests a regulated and organized society, a citizenship in which there will be common relations to be fulfilled. There are not only crowns to be worn, which might only be badges of honor, but they shall reign for ever, being placed in authority by Him who is their God; they may be rulers over many things, over five cities or ten. To what
