The question again recurred on the motion made by Mr. John Quincy Adams, that the said message be referred to a select committee; when,

Another member, viz: from the State of New York, Ely Moore, appeared, was sworn to support the constitution of the United States, and took his

seat.

Mr. Gillet presented a petition of Jonathan Elliott, of the State of New York, praying compensation for property used by the United States troops, under the command of General Hampton, in 1813.

Mr. Gillet presented a petition of Joshua Hillyard, of the State of New York, praying for the passage of an act, authorising the payment for forage furnished the troops at Plattsburgh during the last war.

Mr. Gillet presented a petition of Benjamin Reynolds, of the State of New York, praying payment for wood and timber, and for services in furnishing the same, for the use of the United States troops during the

last war.

Mr. Gillet presented the petition of Elisha Button, of the county of Clinton, in the State of New York, praying payment of a claim, transferred to him by Anson Brinton, of said county, for forage furnished for the use of Government during the last war.

Mr. Gillet also presented a memorial of sundry citizens of the county of Clinton, in the State of New York, praying payment to the holders of certificates and due bills given by M. F. Durand, for materials and provisions furnished for the benefit of the United States troops during the last war.

Mr. Gillet presented petitions of Allen Smith, and Elias Woodruff, of the State of New York, praying payment for supplies and labor furnished the troops in the United States service during the last war.

Mr. Gillet presented a petition of Ebenezer Wilcox, of the State of New York, praying compensation for damages sustained by the loss of a horse, while in the service of the United States, during the last war.

Mr. Gillet presented a petition of Charles Goodspead, of the State of New York, praying for the balance of a demand for stabling and hay, furnished the troops of the United States, during the last war.

Mr. Muhlenberg presented a petition of Jerome Barhyett, of the State of New York, praying compensation for injury sustained by the loss of horses and other property, while engaged in the serviee of the United States, during the last war.

Mr. McKim presented a petition of James J. Pattison, of the State of Maryland, praying compensation for injury sustained in consequence of the burning of his dwelling house, by the enemy during the last war.

Mr. Mercer presented a petition of James B. Chalmers, Horatio S. Chalmers, Mary Jane Chalmers, and Dorothy A. Chalmers, heirs of the late Rev. John Chalmers, deceased, praying for the payment of a claim in favor of their ancestor, for property destroyed during the invasion of the city of Washington by the enemy in 1814.

Mr. Thompson, of South Carolina, presented a petition of William Woodward and William Mitchell, praying that certain money may be refunded, which they deposited in the patent office, for defraying the charges of a patent which was not issued.

Mr. French presented a petition of Richard Hart, of Kentucky, praying compensation for injury sustained by the loss of a horse, in the service of Government, during the last war.

Mr. Underwood presented a petition of Carlton Belt, of the State of Kentucky, praying remuneration for a gun, furnished to the soldiers during the last war, who went on the campaign conducted by General Hopkins up the Wabash.

Mr. Shields presented a petition of Thomas F. McCanlass, of the State of Tennessee, praying compensation for a horse lost while in the service of the United States, during the last war.

Mr. Shields presented a petition of David McCanlass, of the State of Tennessee, praying compensation for his gun, lost in the service of the United States, during the last war.

Mr. Moses Mason presented a petition of James Collier, of Ohio, praying compensation for services as spy to an army in 1794.

Mr. Thomson, of Ohio, presented a petition of Charles C. Haddock, of Ohio, son and heir at law of John Haddock, late of New York, deceased, praying remuneration for loss sustained by his said ancestor, by the burning of his dwelling house, with all its contents, by the enemy, during the last

war.

Mr. May presented a petition of James Baker, of Illinois, praying remuneration for a horse, wagon, and harness, furnished for the use of the Illinois militia, in the service of the United States in 1832.

Mr. May presented a petition of Thomas W. Taylor, of the State of Illinois, praying compensation for a horse taken into the service of the United States, while engaged against the Sac and Fox Indians in 1832. Mr. May presented a petition of Isaac B. Essex, of the State of Illinois, praying compensation for a horse, lost in the service of the United States in 1832.

Mr. May presented a petition of Albion T. Crow, of the State of Illinois, praying compensation for the loss of a stable, destroyed by fire while in the possession of the United States troops in 1832.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be severally referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr. Ashley presented the petition of Captain John Symington, of the State of Missouri, praying to be indemnified for damages and costs recovered against him, as agent of the Government, in favor of a citizen of St. Louis, in 1834.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee of Claims. Mr. Ashley presented the petition of Morris James, heretofore presented on the 23d of December, 1833; which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr, Lawrence presented a memorial of A. and C. Cunningham, of the State of Massachusetts, praying to be reimbursed certain duties paid upon merchandise imported by them, and purchased prior to the passage of the tariff law of 1828.

Mr. Lawrence presented a memorial of Nathaniel Goddard, of the State of Massachusetts, praying to be reimbursed certain duties paid upon merchandise, an order for the purchase of which was given prior to the passage of the tariff law of 1828.

Mr. Lawrence presented a memorial of Samuel Austin, jr. of the State of Massachusetts, praying to be reimbursed certain duties paid by him upon hemp imported, an order for which was given prior to the passage of the tariff law of 1828.

Mr. Lawrence presented a memorial of Nathan Pratt, of the State of Massachusetts, praying to be reimbursed certain duties paid by him upon wool, imported and purchased prior to the passage of the tariff law

of 1828.

Mr. Cambreleng presented a memorial of the chairman of the general committee of citizens of the city of New York, praying for an extension of credit on all existing custom-house bonds of said city, payable after the 16th inst.; also, for the investment of a portion of the unappropriated surplus revenue of the United States, in such funds, and in such manner as will, in some measure, afford relief to the city of New York, from the late damage done by fire therein.

Mr. Cramer presented a memorial of Samuel T. Anderson, of Washington city, praying for an adjustment of his claim against the Government, arising out of the execution of certain orders from the Navy Department, in the year 1814.

Mr. Harper presented a memorial of the president and directors of the Union Gold Mining Company, praying for a remission of duties upon machinery imported for the purposes of mining.

Mr. Hubley presented memorials of sundry citizens of the State of Penn
