The House being about to proceed in the consideration of the unfinished business of yesterday, viz: the appeal from the decision of the Chair, and the matters therewith connected, arising out of a petition of citizens of the State of Massachusetts, praying for the abolition of slavery and the slave trade in the District of Columbia, which Mr. John Quincy Adams was about to present,

A motion was made by Mr. Beardsley, that the further consideration of the said appeal, and the subject matter therewith connected, be postponed until Tuesday, the 12th instant, and that the States be called for the presentation of petitions and memorials.

And on the question to agree to this motion,
It passed in the affirmative.

Petitions were then presented, as follows:

On motion of Mr. John Quincy Adams,

Ordered, That the petition of Eunice Clarke, presented December 12, 1833, be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions. Leave being granted to introduce the same, it was,

On motion of Mr. John Quincy Adams,

Resolved, That the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions be instructed to inquire into the expediency of restoring to the list of pensioners, for services in the revolutionary war, the names of all persons who were entitled to and obtained pensions, under the act of Congress of 18th March, 1818, but whose names were afterwards stricken from the list, and have not since been restored, for the single reason that they were not in indigent poverty.

Mr. Pearce, of Rhode Island, presented the memorial and other papers, heretofore presented to Congress, from the officers and soldiers of the Rhode Island brigade of the revolutionary army, and moved that the said memorial and papers be referred to a select committee.

A motion was made by Mr. Hardin, that the said memorial and papers be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims; which motion, taking precedence of that made by Mr. Pearce,

The question was put that the House, do agree to the same,
And passed in the affirmative.

Mr. Reed presented a petition of John Collins, of the State of Massachusetts, praying a pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war. Mr. Reed presented a petition of James J. Coffin, of the State of Massachusetts, praying for an increase of pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Jackson presented a petition of Ebenezer Brown, of the State of Massachusetts, praying that the pension heretofore allowed him, but which he was obliged to relinquish, may be restored to him.

Mr. Pearce, of Rhode Island, presented a petition of Elizabeth Pearce, administratrix of Jonathan Pearce, of the State of Rhode Island, praying for arrears of pension from the 7th of June, 1831, to the 30th day of March, 1832, which the said Jonathan would have received had he lived until that time.

Mr. Pearce, of Rhode Island, presented a petition of John Bailey, of the State of New York, praying a pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Ingham presented the petition of Rebecca Noyes and others, heirs at law of Paul Noyes, deceased, of the State of Connecticut, praying for the

payment of a debt due them as heirs for the services of their ancestor, rendered during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Ingham presented the petition of Alexander Phelps, of the State of Connecticut, an invalid pensioner, praying for an increase of pension.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

The under mentioned petitions heretofore, presented, were again presented and referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions, viz:

Mr. Taliaferro presented a petition of William Pattee, of the State Virginia, praying for a pension of ninety-six dollars per annum, for services rendered during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Morgan presented a petition of John Burdin, of the State of Virginia, praying for a pension.

Mr. Huntington presented a petition of Stephen Talmadge, of Suffolk county, in the State of New York, a soldier of the revolutionary war, praying for a pension.

Mr. Wardwell presented a petition of Conrad Watts, of Orleans county, in the State of New York, a soldier of the revolutionary war, praying for a pension.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

Mr. Vanderpoel presented a petition of Catharine Burnham, of the county of Rensselaer, in the State of New York, daughter of Guy Young, deceased, praying for commutation pay due to her father, who was a soldier in the revolutionary war.

Mr. Turrill presented a petition of Henry Dygert, of Oswego, in the State of New York, heir of Peter Dygert, praying to be remunerated for loss sustained upon continental money, which was paid him for services rendered during the revolution.

Mr. Philo C. Fuller presented a petition of John Van Campen, who was a lieutenant in the Pennsylvania continental line during the war of the revolution, praying commutation pay, pursuant to the public faith pledged to the officers of the revolution, by a resolution of Congress, passed in 1783.

Mr. Logan presented a petition of Robert Peling, of the State of Pennsylvania, praying compensation for services rendered to the United States during the war of the revolution.

Mr. Chambers, of Pennsylvania, presented a petition of James Irwin, of Pennsylvania, heir of Archibald Irwin, deceased, praying compensation for services rendered by his father during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Ash presented a memorial of Catharine Roberts, of the city of Philadelphia, widow of Thomas Roberts, a soldier of the revolutionary war, praying for such annuity as was allowed to her husband in his life time, by the State of Pennsylvania, for his revolutionary services.

Mr. Sutherland presented a petition of Margaret Wilson, of the State of Pennsylvania, widow of the late Benjamin Marshall, deceased, a revolutionary soldier, praying remuneration for the services of her husband during the war of the revolution; and also for property belonging to her husband, which was destroyed by the British troops.

Mr. Craig presented a petition of James Paxton, executor of Captain John Jordan, of the army of the revolution, praying for commutation pay due to the said John Jordan.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims.

Mr. Hard presented a petition of sundry inhabitants of the State of New York, praying for an appropriation for the construction of a canal around the Falls of Niagara.

Mr. Wardwell presented a like petition of sundry other inhabitants of the State of New York.

Mr. Haley presented a petition of sundry inhabitants of the State of Connecticut, praying for an appropriation for the purpose of deepening the channel of the Thames river, in said State.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on Roads and Canals.

The under mentioned petitions and memorials, heretofore presented, were again presented, and referred to the Committee on Roads and Canals, viz: By Mr. Galbraith: The petitions of sundry inhabitants of the State of Pennsylvania, for the improvement of the navigation of the Allegany river, from Pittsburgh to Olean point, presented February 6, 1832.

By Mr. Denney: The petition of sundry inhabitants of the State of Pennsylvania, for McAdamizing five miles of the road from Pittsburgh, eastwardly, embracing the road to the United States' arsenal, presented December 5, 1834.

Mr. Taliaferro presented a petition of Landon N. Carter, a lieutenant of marines, praying for the payment of a claim of one hundred and ninetyfour dollars, for quarters.

Mr. Sutherland presented a petition of sundry boatswains, gunners, carpenters, and sailmakers of the Navy, praying for the adoption of certain regulations, and for an increase of pay.

Mr. Ingersoll presented a petition of Henry Fry, praying for the passage of an act instructing the Secretary of the Navy to recognise him as purser in the Navy.

Mr. McKeon presented a petition of Mary Fish and Catharine McMurray, of the city of New York, praying for an amendment of the law regulating pensions to persons on board private armed vessels.

Mr. Reed presented a petition of Commodore Isaac Hull, praying to be reimbursed a certain sum of money disbursed by him as Navy Agent: and also a sum of money which he paid by order of the Navy Board.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.
