Facts Concerning the Use of Judson Powder in Mining Anthracite and Bituminous Goal.

IT

T is generally believed that only black powder can be used for coal mining, and that no explosive containing nitro-glycerine in any proportion can be employed because of the expense and greater waste of coal which it is assumed would result.

As a matter of fact, Judson Powder, which contains a small percentage of nitro-glycerine, has been regularly used, in increasing quantities, for more than eight years at mines in the Hazleton District of Pennsylvania.

Critical tests made at the Cross Creek Colliery, under the direction of the Hon. E. B. Coxe, prove that Judson Powder, although

of higher price than black powder, is nevertheless more economical to use.

Instead of making more fine coal, as was at first feared by some, the opposite has been found to be the case; less small coal being made with Judson than with black powder.

The cap which is required to explode the Judson was objected to at first, but we know of no acci

Judson as safer than common blasting powder, since sparks or flame from miners' lamps will not explode it; a lighted lamp may be thrown into a package of Judson Powder without danger.

Users notice that the smoke from Judson Powder is much less than that from black powder, which makes it possible to quickly and thoroughly inspect the walls after making a blast, so that the miner is enabled to better guard against the fatal falls of top coal which are so common.
