LONDON MARKETS,

FROM FRIDAY, MAY 29, TO JUNE 19, 1818.

COTTON.-The cotton market continues rather heavy; the purchases by private contract consist of only a few Pernams, 2s. 11d.; Babias, 233d.; Bengals, 10d.

The public sale this forenoon went off however with considerable briskness, and much higher than was anticipated: it consisted of 465 bales Cotton; the greater proportion prime Demerara sold 2s. 2d, and 25. 3d.; ordinary Berbice 22. a 23d.; good 2s. 1d. a 2s. Id.}

SUGAR.-The market since Tuesday has been pretty well supplied with new Sugars, and as the trade are out of stock, the business done has been considerable; the holders still evince an inclination to effect sales at the currency of the market; the prices may be stated at a further decline of Is. per cwt.

There has been little business done in Refined goods; as the stock appears increasing, and the demand still languid, the market may be stated at a decline of Is. One or two purchases of Lumps are reported about 105s and 106s. The request for Molasses continues to be considerable.

There are few enquiries after Havannah or Brazil Sugars. At the India House, the brown descriptions went off lower.

COFFEE.-Coffee early in the week went of with briskness; the demand has since given way, and at the public sales of Wednesday, a depression of 2s. a 3s. was submitted to. This forenoon two sales were brought forward; they went off much about the depression we have stated. The Mocha Coffee at the India House sold so high as 149s. a 152s. 6d. for good; inferior 123s. a 126s.; much damaged 114s. a 120,

TOBACCO.-There have been few parchases lately of Tobacco. A cargo of Virginia is reported sold for a Continental port at 61s, a 62s.

SPICES-There is no variation in Spices, Pimento continues in request.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.There is little or no business doing in Brandy or Geneva; the quotations are nearly nominal. This forenoon a public sale of Rum was brought forward; the strong descriptions went off freely-but little alteration in the prices of Rum can be stated,

TALLOW. The prices of Foreign Tallow are a shade lower.—The Town market is to day quoted 79s. 6d., which is 6d, higher than last week.

FRIDAY, JUNE 5.

COTTON.-The Cotton market has become exceedingly heavy; the purchases by private contract for the week up to the evening of yesterday, are about 800 packages; the greater proportion sold on Friday and Saturday last; the prices are a shade lower.

SUGAR.-The demand for good Sugars has continued steady during the week; the finer descriptions being scarce, fully support the late prices; the ordinary qualities are rather lower: the wind having become favourable, very extensive arrivals are immediately expected.

There have been several parcels of Lumps brought into the market this week, and generally met a ready sale; but as the request appears chiefly confined to these descriptions, and the holders being earnest to effect sales, the prices may be quoted a shade lower, and the refined market may be stated heavy.-Molasses are without variation,

There are no enquiries made after Foreign Sugars.

COFFEE.-Coffee continues to fluctuate greatly. Wednesday's public sales went off with spirit, fully supporting the previous currency by private contract. At a large sale yesterday Coffee sold 2s. lower. This forenoon 169 casks and 728 bags were brought forward, chiefly Dutch descriptions; the whole went off heavily at prices a shade lower than yesterday.

OIL.-The prices of Oil are rather lower, but the quotations are nearly nominal: there is no part of the large quantity of Oil lately held on speculation brought to mar-` ket.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.The public sale of Rum yesterday went off at prices fully supporting the late currency, and with more briskness than was expected; the government contract, 100,000 gallons, which was known in the morning, had a favourable effect. Brandy has again declined considerably,→Geneva may also be purchased lower,

TALLOW. The prices of Foreign Tallow are nominally a shade lower, but there is little or no business doing.-The Town market is to-day quoted 74s. 6d,, which is 28. lower than last week.

FRIDAY, JUNE 12.

COTTON.-The Cotton market has been very heavy for some time; the limited sales effected are at a small reduction. The East India sale declared for the 26th inst, is still assigned as the chief cause of the languid state of the market.

SUGAR.-There have been few purchases of Muscovades during the week; the limited sales which have been effected are chiefly middling and fine Sugars, which are scarce, and fully support the late prices; the lower qualities are more plentiful, and the holders, being anxious to effect sales, have in several instances submitted to a depression of 1s, per cwt. The request for the lower qualities of Refined Sugars had

greatly increased, and the late currency is fully maintained; the finer descriptions are more plentiful, and are offered at prices is. to 2s. lower. The demand for Molasses has rather given way. There is more inquiry after Foreign Sugar.-At a public sale, middling white Brazil 58s.; good white Havannah 66s. 6d.

COFFEE. The public sales of British Plantation Coffee, brought forward this week, have been very extensive; the greater proportion was disposed of, but generally a small reduction was submitted to, particularly in the ordinary descriptions of Jamaica, which sell at a decline of about 2s.; the other qualities may be stated Is. lower; the request for Foreign descriptions has been very considerable, and in several instances an advance of 1s, to 2s. has been realized.

OILS. The prices of Oil remain in an unsettled state on account of the large supplies expected from the stock of the speculators; in the mean time, the limited purchases made are at a small decline.-Sperm has again given way on account of further arrivals.

SPICES.-Pimento continues inquired after; good quality 10d. .-In other Spices there is little doing. The India Company have declared for 13th August, Company's-120,000lbs. Cinnamon; 100,000lbs. Nutmegs; 100,000lbs. Cloves, 35,000lbs.

Mace.

RICE. The public sale of East India Rice this forenoon went off rather lower; it consisted of 3320 bags; the greater proportion middling quality Java, sold 16s. 6d. and 17s.; a few lots 16s.; 120 bags fine Java, 25s.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.The public sale of Tuesday consisted of about 250 puncheons Jamaica Rum: The following were the particulars-13 to 15, 3s. 3d. to 3s. 4d. ; 21 to 22, 3s. 6d. ; 25 to 27, 4s. 4d.; 27 to 28, 4s. 6d.; 29 to 30, 4s. 8d.; 31 to 33, 4s. 9d.-The market since has been very heavy-The great depression that has taken place in the prices of Brandy does not facilitate sales-Geneva is without variation.

TALLOW.—The prices of Foreign Tal low are entirely nominal; some few parcels are offered even under our reduced quotations.-The Town market is to day quoted at 74s. 6d. which is the same as last week.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19.

COTTON.-The Cotton market remains exceedingly heavy, owing principally to the large sale of East India declared for this day week. The total sales since our last little exceed 200 packages-inconsiderable parcels of Pernams, Demeraras, Surats, and Bengals, at prices little varied; the quantities were so trivial, that the prices form no criterion of the market currency.

SUGAR.-There has been little business

done in Muscovades this week; the impor ters would submit to no depression to facilitate sales, and the buyers purchased only small parcels, calculating that a decline will take place when the market is better supplied, which will probably be the case next week: there were few good or fine Sugars on show; the prices could not be stated at any variation. In the Refined market there was more doing; the new supplies brought forward are still very limited, and as the demand was considerable, the former prices were fully supported. There were two or three parcels of Brazil Sugars brought forward by public sale, they went off without briskness at prices a shade lower.

COFFEE.-There continues to be considerable fluctuations in Coffee. The public sales of Wednesday went off with much briskness at an advance of 28. per cwt. This forenoon two sales took place, the first, consisting of Jamaica and Demerara descriptions, went off with much briskness; the latter at a further advance of 1s. to 25. ; the Jamaica much about the previous prices: the second sale was chiefly withdrawn at very high prices.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.There has been little business done in Rum; the market by private contract may be stated very heavy, with little alteration in the prices. The public sale this forenoon cannot be given as any criterion of the market, as the quality was very indifferent, consisting of 104 puncheons Jamaica- 23 to 25, 3s. 3d.; 25 to 28, 3s. 8d. to 3s. 9d. ; 29 to 35, 4s. 3d. to 4s. 6d. ; 36 to 37, 4s, 8d. The prices of Brandy are nominal; the market exceedingly heavy.-Geneva may be purchased a shade lower.

RICE.-There is an improving demand for Rice; the sale at the India House on Monday went off freely at prices Is. to 2s. higher: it consisted of 15,000 bags.-Yellow ordinary Bengal, 15s, to 15s. 6d. ; good fair, 18s. to 18s. 6d. ; white good clean, 20s. 6d. to 21s. ; fine 25s, 6d, to 26s.

FRUIT. There is very little demand for Fruit. A public sale was brought forward this forenoon, consisting of Sun Raisins, Muscatels, Figs, Plums, &c. the greater proportion was withdrawn on account of the limited request.

TALLOW.--The prices of Foreign Tallow are entirely nominal; there is little or no business doing: Yellow Candle Tallow, nominally about 71s. to 72s.-The Town market is to day quoted at 75s, which is 6d. higher than last week.

TOBACCO.--There is little doing in Tobacco; the prices are without variation. OIL.-The prices of Greenland Oil may be stated at a further depression of 11. to 2. per ton; there are however few sales at the reduction. -Southern has declined in the same proportion.-The other descriptions of Oil are heavy at the quoted currency.
