CONFESSIONS.

ALMIGHTY Lord God, who by Thy wisdom not only guidest and orderest all things most suitably to Thine own justice; but also performest Thy pleasure in such a manner, that we cannot but acknowledge Thee to be righteous in all Thy ways, and holy in all Thy works: We Thy sinful people do here fall down before Thee, confessing that Thy judgments [are] right; ... we having drawn down the same upon ourselves, by the great and long provocations of our sins against Thee. For which we do therefore here humble ourselves before Thee; beseeching Thee to deliver this Nation from guiltiness, . . . and to turn from us and our pos

terity all those judgments, which we by our sins have worthily deserved: Grant this, for the all-sufficient merits of Thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

MOST powerful and glorious Lord God,

the Lord of hosts, that rulest and commandest all things; Thou sittest in the throne judging right, and therefore we make our address to Thy Divine Majesty in this our necessity, that Thou wouldest take the cause into Thine own hand, and judge between us and our enemies. Stir up Thy strength, O Lord, and come and help us; for Thou givest not alway the battle to the strong, but canst save by many or by few. O let not our sins now cry against us for vengeance; but hear us Thy poor servants begging mercy, and imploring Thy help, and that Thou wouldest be a defence unto us against the face of the enemy. Make it appear that Thou art our Saviour and mighty Deliverer; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

URN Thou us, O good Lord, and so shall

TURN

we be turned. Be favourable, O Lord, Be favourable to Thy people, Who turn to Thee in weeping, fasting, and praying. For Thou art a merciful God, Full of compassion, Long-suffering, and of great pity. Thou sparest when we deserve punishment, And in Thy wrath thinkest upon mercy. Spare Thy people, good Lord, spare them, And let not Thine heritage be brought to confusion. Hear us, O Lord, for Thy mercy is great, And after the multitude of Thy mercies look upon us; Through the merits and mediation of Thy blessed Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

R

EMEMBER not, Lord, our offences, nor

the offences of our forefathers; neither take Thou vengeance of our sins: spare us, good Lord, spare Thy people, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever.

Spare us, good Lord.
