PREFATORY NOTE THOSE Who have followed Mr. Dana as a sailor in his "Two Years Before the Mast" may have a special interest in following him as a lawyer, publicist, statesman, and father in the Speeches and Letters. In the Introductory Sketch and the Notes, I have freely stated what I thought, without reserve. I believe the facts will warrant all the statements; but I have not held back from saying what was in my mind or heart for fear of any bias I may have in writing of a much beloved father. Let the reader, now that he is forewarned, forearm himself with as many grains of chloride of sodium as he desires. R. H. D. 39X1305 |
