PREFACE

O doubt the centenary of Burns's death will set

his lifetime, so fortunate in the place he now holds in the hearts of thousands of folk in every country and on every sea. For this reason it is believed that an edition of his poetical works, produced in a style of supreme typographical excellence, but published at a popular price, will be welcomed as a worthy tribute to his memory.

Everyone concerned in the production of this the "In Memoriam" edition, so to call it, has worked with a single desire to make the book a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. It is due to Mr. Clement Wilson that I should say he has grudged no expense in order to attain this end.

As to the editing, it must always be a pleasure to edit Burns-and a pain. Such at least has been my experience; but the point need not be discussed now. Only a broad classification has been adopted. His works have been divided into four groupsthe Poems; the Epistles; the Songs, arranged, as nearly as may be, in their chronological order; the Epigrams and Epitaphs. The Epistles particularly deserve to be brought into special prominence, because amongst them will be found the happiest of Burns's effusions.

Although the text of Burns is practically fixed, I have nevertheless carefully collated several of the standard editions, and corrected not a few misreadings.
