To serve God is to reign: to work for God is to rest. This is our privilege: may it be our experience! We commonly describe the Christian Life as a race, a strife, or a journey. So Holy Scripture speaks of it, and so it is. But our statements are incomplete. We have to keep in mind that the Christian race and its prize save us from a more wearisome course of sin,—that the Christian's strife and his victory take the place of a more severe struggle, whose only end would have been defeat and death,—that the Christian in his journey has already come to Mount Sion and to JESUS. If toil is the lot of the righteous," there is no peace to the wicked.” PART I. Faith is the first Resting-place of the soul. We know nothing of the unseen, till GoD supplies that knowledge, giving us faith to receive it. In faith we rest, and are no more unsettled by any private opinions of our own. The teaching of God in His Church is our guide. Believing in JESUS we find rest unto our souls. In the Sacraments which the LORD commanded we have union with Him, receiving grace and power to do the will of God. PART II. Many of us forget that we were purged from our old sins: backsliders even forget their Resting-place in the Church of God. The way of Repentance is the only way of return: each step, painful though it be, is a foretaste of rest, and is itself a refreshing after the weariness of sin. PART III.
