Who by Thy Cross and Precious Blood hast redeemed us: Save us and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.

Live, O! for ever live and reign,

Blest Lamb, Whom Thine own

love has slain; And may Thy lost sheep live

to be

True lovers of Thy Cross and Thee.

The peace of GOD which passeth all understanding; theblessing of GOD Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; the virtue of the blessed Cross and Passion of our LORD JESUS CHRIST be with us now and unto the end. Amen.

56.-EVENING PRAYERS. In the Name. Our Father. My GOD, I thank Thee for all the blessings of the past day. I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest; for it is Thou, LORD, only, that makest me dwell in safety. Guard my lying down and my rising up, from henceforth and for ever.

Grant, O LORD, grace, mercy, and life everlasting to all my relations-and friends,and every one for whom I ought to pray, or who needs my prayers. Comfort the afflicted. Give rest to the departed. [The line- means, Stop and think.]

Visit, O LORD, this house, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let Thy holy Angels dwell in it, to preserve us in peace; and may Thy blessing be upon us evermore, through JESUS CHRIST Our LORD. Amen. JESU, Bleeding Dying Love! Let me daily die with Thee; That in Thy sweet Arms above

I may rest eternally.

The LORD bless and preserve us this night; the LORD make His face to shine upon us, and keep us under the shadow of His wings; the LORD lift up the light of His countenance upon us, and give us peace and rest in Him; now and for ever. Amen.

57.-LATE EVENING

PRAYERS.

In the Name. Our Father. O LORD, fulfil all Thy works of grace in me, that I may fulfil all the service that I owe Thee; through JESUS CHRIST our LORD. Amen.

O Heavenly Father, for Thine own great mercies' sake; for Thy truth and promises' sake; for the sake of all the merits and sufferings of the Son of Thy love: pardon all my sins and failings, and receive me into Thy favour. Amen.

LORD, forsake us not in the vanishing of our days; but

still continue Thy gracious | hast redeemed me, O Lord, Thou

and fatherly care over us. Be Thou our Light and Defence, our Guide and Guard, through the valley of the shadow of death to the holy hill of Thine honour and our rest; for JESUS CHRIST'S sake. Amen.

Almighty Father, grant us, we beseech Thee, Thy grace; that we, who reverently make a remembrance of the Incarnation, Nativity, Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of the Son; and also of the Coming of the Holy Ghost; may, by the grace of the same Holy Ghost, rise from the death of the soul, and with Thee live an eternal life, through JESUS CHRIST our LORD. Amen.

Let Thy mighty hand and stretched-out arm, O LORD, be ever our defence; Thy mercy and loving-kindness in JESUS CHRIST, Thy dear Son, our salvation; Thy true and holy word, our instruction; Thy grace and Holy Spirit, our comfort and consolation, this night and for evermore. Amen.

LORD, lighten mine eyes: That I sleep not in death.

Grant us, O LORD, Thy Light: That we, being saved from the darkness of our hearts, may come to the True Light Which is Christ.

Father, into Thy Hands I commend myself, my spirit, soul, and body: For Thou

God of Truth.

LORD, save us as we wake, keep us as we sleep: That we may watch with Christ and rest in peace.

May the souls of all the faithful departed, by the mercy of GOD, rest in the peace of JESUS CHRIST. Amen.

JESU, in my hour of Rest,

After life's long weary day, In Thy Arms and on Thy Breast

Let me breathe my life away!

The GOD of mercy and peace be with us and ours, and with all that need His blessing, this night and for ever. Amen.

58. THE EVENING.
Daily Self-Examination.
O Fount of mercy,
Light of heaven,
Our darkness cast away;
And grant us all,

Through Thee forgiven,
To see the perfect day.

Did I think of GOD when I awoke?

Did I rise in good time? Did I say my prayers, fully and devoutly?

Have I remembered GOD'S Presence through the day? How far have I kept my good resolutions?

Have I guarded my heart against evil thoughts?

Renewal of Vows. Said I not so, that I would sin no more?

Witness, my GOD, I did; Yet I am run again upon the

score:

O, say not so: thou canst not tell what strength

Thy GOD may give thee at the length:

Renew thy vows, and if thou keep the last,

Thy GOD will pardon all that's past.

Vow while thou canst: while
thou canst vow thou may'st
Perhaps perform it when thou
thinkest least.

Thy God hath not denied thee
all,
Whilst He permits Thee but
to call:

Call to thy GOD for grace to
keep

Thy vows; and, if thou break
them, weep.

Weep for thy broken vows,
and vow again.
Vows made with tears cannot
be still in vain.

Then, once again,

I vow to mend my ways; LORD, say Amen,

And Thine be all the praise.

Hymns.

Blest be Thy love, dear LORD,
That taught us this sweet
way;

My faults cannot be hid. Only to love Thee for Thyself,
And for that love obey.

What shall I do? Make vows,

and break them still?

"Twill be but labour lost; My good cannot prevail against mine ill,

The business will be crost.

O Thou our souls chief Hope,
We to Thy mercy fly;
Where'er we are, Thou canst
protect,

Whate'er we need, supply.

All praise to Thee in light arrayed,

Who light Thy dwellingplace hast made.

A boundless ocean of bright beams

From Thy all-glorious Godhead streams.

The sun in its meridian height Is Thy darkness in Thy sight! My soul O lighten and inflame With thought and love of Thy Great Name.

Shine on me, LORD, new life impart,

Fresh ardours kindle in my heart;

One ray of Thy all-quickening light

Dispels the sloth and clouds of night.

LORD, lest the tempter me surprise, Watch over Thine own sacri

fice;

All loose, all idle thoughts

cast cut,

And make my very dreams devout.

Praise GOD, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy

Ghost. Amen.

Five Parts of Evening Prayer. 1. Give thanks to GOD. 2. Beg light.
