for he has an undoubted right to your obedience; and consequently your negligence and crimes will be more offensive on this very account. But the question proposed implies, that you are anxious for a decision. It is true his servants are so, by his eternal choice; they are so by a costly and invaluable purchase; they are so by an effectual and gracious call; but these replies leave the harassed querist in a state of extreme perplexity. They are not scriptural marks given us to decide our dubious apprehensions concerning our state, but rather designed to establish our faith in God's designs of mercy, and confirm our resolution to serve him. Your own conscience must settle the point. By that, will the Holy Ghost, speak peace or terror to your mind-assurance or conviction.

Enquire then, if you have with true contrition, mourned over your unprofitableness; if you desire unreservedly and cheerfully to serve him; if conscious of your inability to obey him, you are deriving, by faith, strength from Jesus the exclusive source of power; and are depending on him alone for acceptance. Remember, the question is this, Am I the servant? -not, Is God the master? State it accurately and will decide it far more easily.

you

And secondly. Let the servant of God be cheered by remembering who is his master. Every rela

tive character is well exemplified and sustained by Jehovah. He notices you in all your labors; no act of obedience shall be unobserved or unrewarded. His thoughts in reference to your service are not as yours, neither are his ways as yours. Encourage yourselves in the Lord. Your desires shall shortly be accomplished; "there shall be no more curse,' and as his servants you shall serve him.

"

To conclude. Let us contemplate the happy termination of the sacred volume. It begins with the entrance of crime and the curse; and closes with the abolition of sin and misery, and an assurance of perfect and perpetual sanctity and joy. "And there "shall be no more curse: but the throne of God "and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants "shall serve him. And they shall see his face; and "his name shall be in their foreheads. And there "shall be no night there; and they need no candle, "neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth "them light: and they shall reign for ever and "ever."*

May it be our felicity, through the merits and oblation of the Savior, to be of that holy number. Amen!
