grace preserve me from all the temptations to which I shall be exposed, in all those places and companies whither my occasions shall lead me; defend me from thieves and robbers, and protect me from all other dangers and evil accidents. Preserve my going out and my coming in. Let thy providence be my guard, thy grace my defence, and thy blessed self my portion, now and evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AFTER A JOURNEY.

ALMIGHTY God, who savest our life from destruction, and crownest us with mercy and loving-kindness; blessed be thy holy name, that thou hast brought me safe to the end of my journey, and preserved me from the innumerable accidents and dangers to which I was exposed. It is of thy mercy that my health has been continued to me, notwithstanding those various circumstances that might have impaired it. It is of thy goodness that no evil men have made any assault upon me, when others have suffered by their unjust violence. It is from thy providence that I have been protected from falls, so that not a bone of me is broken. How many unforeseen dangers, O Lord, hast thou delivered me from; and how many,

L

that have threatened me, hast thou overruled! Lord, I will triumph in thy praise; and not only with my lips, but in my life, express my thanks, by being more obedient to thy holy commands, and serving thee, in holiness and righteousness, all the days of my life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR A HUSBAND AND WIFE,
To be said by them together.

O God, by whose favour and providence we are made one flesh, look mercifully upon us from heaven, and bless us, and make us instrumental to the eternal salvation of each other.

Give us grace, that we may faithfully perform our marriage-vows, that we may live in perfect love and peace together, in a conscientious obedience to thy laws, and in a comfortable prospect of happiness all our days. Grant, if it be thy gracious will, that we may live to see our children Christianly and virtuously brought up; or, if in thy wisdom thou shalt order it otherwise, be pleased in mercy to provide for their everlasting happiness. In the mean time, give us grace that we may teach them and our household the fear of God, and be examples to them of piety and true religion.

Continue to us such a share of the good things of this world as to thee seems most meet for us; and whatever our condition shall be, enable us to be content and thankful. Vouchsafe us a share in the happiness of the next life; and thy blessed will be done for what shall happen to us in this.

Hear us, O God, for Jesus Christ his sake, the Son of thy love. Amen, amen.

BISHOP WILSON.

FOR OUR PARENTS.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast strictly commanded us to honour our father and our mother next unto thee; grant me, of thy goodness and grace, so to love and to honour my parents, to fear, and to obey them, to help, and to pray for them, as thou in thy holy word hast directed and charged me to do; that both in their life and at their death their souls may bless me, and by thy fatherly mercy I may obtain that blessing which thou hast promised to those that honour their father and their mother; and mayest number me among those thy children who are heirs of thy glorious kingdom, through thy well-beloved and dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BISHOP COSINS.

FOR OUR CHILDREN.

I.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, who makest us both to will and to do those things that be good and acceptable unto thy divine Majesty; we make our humble supplications unto thee for these thy children [this thy child], whom thou hast vouchsafed to regenerate by water and the Holy Ghost, and hast incorporated into thy holy Church, the mystical body of thy Son; let thy fatherly hand, we beseech thee, ever be over them; let thy Holy Spirit ever be with them; daily increase in them thy manifold gifts of grace, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and ghostly strength, the spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of thy word, that in the end they may obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who, with thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth ever one God, world without end. Amen.

II.

LITURGY.

ALMIGHTY God, the Father and Maker of us all, who of thy blessing and goodness hast vouchsafed to make me a father [or mother] of children; be pleased also to accept my hearty thanksgiving and devout praise for the same. And grant me thy

heavenly grace and assistance so to train them up in thy godly nurture, virtue, religion, and discipline, that they may continually serve, honour, and obey thee their heavenly Father; and that thou, acknowledging and blessing them as thy children here, mayest bring them to the blessing prepared for thy children hereafter, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BISHOP COSINS.

FOR THE FAMILY IN WHICH WE LIVE.

VISIT, we beseech thee, most gracious Father, this family with thy salvation; let thy blessing descend, and rest upon all that belong unto it, as well absent as present. Continue to preserve us, thy servants, both in life and death; grant us whatsoever is necessary for our bodies or our souls; guide us with thy counsels here, and hereafter bring us to thy glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BISHOP DIGBY.

FOR THE CONGREGATION TO WHICH WE

BELONG.

O THOU, who acceptest the intercessions which thy servants offer for each other, remember, we entreat thee, for good all the members of thy holy catholic Church, espe
