pardon. And let me find the forgiveness of all my sins; that thy troubled and trembling servant may have peace; and that thou mayest be sought unto, and feared, and served by sinners, who will return unto thee in hopes of thy grace and pardoning mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only | Saviour. Amen.

VI.

KETTLEWELL.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, look down upon me, thine unworthy servant, who here prostrate myself at the footstool of thy throne of grace; but look upon me, O Father, through the mediation and in the merits of Jesus Christ, in whom only thou art well pleased; for of myself I am not worthy to stand before thee, or to speak with my unclean lips to thee, O most holy and eternal God. For as in sin I was conceived and born, so likewise I have broken all thy commandments by my sinful motions, unclean thoughts, evil words, and wicked works; omitting many duties I ought to do, and committing many vices which thou hast forbidden under pain of thy heavy displeasure. As for my sins, O Lord, they are innumerable; wherefore I stand here liable to all the miseries of this life, and everlasting torments in that to come, if thou shouldst deal with me according to my de

serts. I confess, O Lord, that it is thy mercy, which endureth for ever, and thy compassion which never fails, which are the causes that I have not been long ago consumed. But with thee there is mercy, and plenteous redemption: in the multitude, therefore, of thy mercies, and by the merits of Jesus Christ, I entreat thy divine Majesty, that thou wouldst not enter into judgment with thy servant, nor be extreme to mark what is done amiss; but be thou merciful unto me, and wash away all my sins with that precious blood which my Saviour shed for me. And I beseech thee, O Lord, not only to wash away my sins, but also to purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit from the dross of natural corruption; and as thou dost add days to my life, so, good Lord, I beseech thee to add repentance to my days, that, when I have passed this mortal life, I may be partaker of thine everlasting kingdom, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

KING CHARLES I.

O MOST merciful God, whose goodness is great, and the multitudes of thy mercies are innumerable, have mercy upon me; for my sins are ever before me, presented by the continual accusations of a troubled conscience. I have sinned against thee, and

done evil in thy sight; and yet, because thou art the God of mercy and fountain of eternal purity, delighting in the conversion and salvation of a sinner, I present unto thee the sacrifice of a troubled spirit, of a broken and contrite heart, beseeching thee to let the dew of thy favour and the fire of thy love wash away my sins and purify my soul. Make me a clean heart, O God, and pure hands and though my sins be as scarlet, yet do thou make them like wool; though they be as purple, yet make them as white as snow. Restore to me the voice of joy and gladness; let me not be for ever separate from the sweet refreshings of thy favour and presence; but give me the comforts of thy help again, and let thy good Spirit loose me from the bondage of sin, and establish me in the liberty and freedom of the sons of God. So shall I sing of thy righteousness, and my lips shall give thee praise in the congregation of thy redeemed ones, now, henceforth, and for ever. Amen.

BISHOP TAYLOR.

FOR THE CHURCH,

1.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is go

verned and sanctified, I make my humble supplications unto thy divine Majesty for all estates of men in thy holy Church; that every member of the same may truly and faithfully discharge the duties of his vocation and ministry, eschewing those things that are contrary to his profession, and following all such things as are agreeable to the same. And because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness, that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and most merciful Father, I beseech thee to extend thy mercy and compassion to all mankind. O, let the Sun of righteousness give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death; call home thine ancient people the Jews; take off the veil from their hearts, that so both Jew and Gentile may be brought to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus, and to a participation of all the benefits of the new covenant in his blood.

Bless, O Lord, the congregation of all Christian people; reform whatever is amiss in the belief or life of every one who is called by that holy name. Unite them more and more one to another in thy truth, in the bond of love, and in all holy conversation. Deliver, O Lord, the Western Churches

from the miserable yoke of papal usurpation; and the once glorious Churches of the East from the cruel tyranny of infidels. Unite the hearts of princes and pastors in the great work of advancing thy kingdom in righteousness and holiness. Bless all who seek the peace of thy Jerusalem; may peace be within their walls, and plenteousness within their palaces; and may all that love her prosper.

Blessed God, I beseech thee, in a more especial manner, to be favourable and gracious to the Church established in this kingdom; protect and defend her against all her adversaries; suffer neither superstition nor profaneness to pollute her holy worship; deck her priests with righteousness and salvation; and let her saints rejoice and sing; and give us all grace to walk worthy of our most holy profession, that thou mayest still delight to dwell among us, and to do us good; and that thy holy worship and service, which we now enjoy, may by thy mighty protection be continued to us and our posterity for ever. And this I beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
