INDICATIVE MODE. Do I take? Am I taking? Present Tense, Take I? Shall I or will I be taking? POTENTIAL MODE. Present Tense, May I, can I, or must I take? Past Tense, Might I, could I, should I, or would I take? Present Perfect Tense, May I, can I, or must I have taken? THE MODERN OR WEAK CONJUGATION. § 282. Verbs of the Modern or Weak conjugation form their past tense or preterit from the present, by the addition of the sound of -d, -t, or -ed. Hence they are called weak; they require aid from without, instead of being changed from within, as the strong verbs are. The past participle and the preterit have generally the same form. The e of the weak, unaccented syllable ed is often dropped in conversation, so that the word loses its additional syllable, and, upon principles stated in § 85, we are forced to pronounce a t instead of a d. When the e of the termination is dropped, the d will naturally pass into t after p and sh; afters (when it has not the sound of 2); after x, ch, and ck. Thus heaped, fished, kissed, fixed, preached, checked, must be pronounced heapt, fisht, kist, fixt, preacht, checkt. Milton and writers of his age spelled these words as they pronounced them: wisht, fetcht, stript, whipt, mixt. § 283. CONJUGATION OF THE WEAK VERB "TO LOVE." (Commonly called Regular.) Present, Love.
