Mr. Mossman moved an amendment to the first of said five items by striking out the figures "6,000" and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures “9,000”.

On motion of Mr. Beckley, the House thereupon stood in recess until 2 o'clock, p. m.

BILLS ON THIRD READING.

Consideration of the following Bill upon its third reading was resumed:

H. B. No. 2, by the Committee on Finance, entitled "An Act making appropriations for salaries and pay rolls during the two years which will end with the Thirtieth day of June, A. D. 1903."

The Speaker declared that the item under consideration, was the Salary of the Attorney General, being item 1, under the heading "Department of the Attorney General."

Mr. Ewaliko moved an amendment by striking out the figures "6,000" and inserting in lieu thereof the figures "8,000". Mr. Kaniho moved that the item pass as in the Bill. Mr. Keliikoa moved the previous question, which upon being put

to vote was lost. The motion to amend by striking out the figures “6,000” and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures "9,000" was lost. The motion to amend by striking out the figures "6,000" and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures "8,000" was carried. Whereupon the item passed as amended.

The following item was read:

Mr. Ewaliko moved an amendment by striking out the figures “9,000” and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures "8.000”. The amendment carried. Whereupon the item passed amended.

There being no objection, the following item thereupon passed as in the Bill:

Mr. Ewaliko moved an amendment by striking out the figures "9.000" and inserting in lieu thereof. the figures "8.000”. Mr. Prendergast moved to amend the amendment by striking out the figures "8.000" and inserting in lieu thereof. the figures "6 000". Mr. Dickey moved to amend the amendment by striking out the figures "8.000" and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures "7.200". The amendment to the amendment by striking out the figures "8.000" and inserting in lieu thereof. the figures "6,000" was declared carried. Mr. Kumalae questioned the result of the vote and upon a rising vote being had. the amendment to the amendment was lost. The amendment to the amendment by striking out the figures "S.000" and inserting in lieu thereof, the figures "7.200" was adopted. Whereupon the amendment as amended was adopted, and the item passed as amended.

Mr. Dickey moved an amendment to item 2 by striking out the figures "4.712.50" and inserting in lieu thereof the figures "3,760". The amendment was adopted and thereupon the item passed as amended.

Mr. Makekau moved an amendment to the following item:
COMMISSION OF PUBLIC LANDS.

1. Salary of Commissioner

$ 6,000 00

by striking out the figures "6,000" and inserting in lieu thereof the figures "7,200". The vote resulted in a tie. Whereupon the Speaker declared the amendment carried.

Mr. Ewaliko moved an amendment to the following item:

AUDITING DEPARTMENT.

Salary of Auditor ..

$ 6,000 00 by striking out the figures "6,000" and inserting in lieu thereor the figures "7,200". The amendment was adopted. Whereupon the item passed as amended.

Mr. Prendergast called up for consideration the report of the Select Committee to whom had been referred the following items:

$ 4,000 00 Each Circuit Judge of the Territory of Hawaii may appoint a competent stenographic reporter, to be known as the official reporter of such Court. In all criminal cases tried in said Court, such reporter shall take down in shorthand all the testimony, the objections made, and the rulings of the Court; shall write out in longhand or typewriting such testimony and proceedings.

The official reporter shall receive as compensation for his services ten dollars ($10.00) per day for taking said testimony and proceedings, and shall also receive twenty cents per folio of one hundred (100) words for writing out the notes so taken on the direction of the Judge.

The Committee's report filed May 24th, recommended that the first of said items be stricken out, and that the second of said items be amended to read as follows:

5. Salary of Stenographers $ 7,200 00 and that as they found that all the stenographers employed by the Department were necessary, that no change be made therein, and that the items be retained at the figures in the Bill.

Mr. Dickey moved that the report be adopted. The mo tion was carried. Whereupon the items above enumerated were ordered reinserted or amended where changed in conformity with the report of the Committee.
