criticism,* that 'either Version (Old or New) is humiliating to the taste of the nation.' The truth is, that a translation of the Hebrew Psalter, as a whole, into English verse, that shall be at once faithful, poetical, and suited for music, is, up to the present time, a proved and admitted impossibility.† Of existing metrical versions of the Book of Psalms, Archdeacon Churton's 'Cleveland Psalter' is probably the one of which it will be said, as Johnson said of Watts,|| that 'it is sufficient for him to have done better than others what no man has done well.' The Church, as well as the compiler of this volume, is much indebted to the Archdeacon of Cleveland, for the free use which he allows to be made of his admirable renderings. Psalms 16 (2nd version), 25 (2nd version), 27, 31, 47, 62, 66, 72, 89, 92 (2nd version) 96, 98 (2nd version) 118, 119 (parts 1, 3, 5), 136 (2nd version), 146 are from the Cleveland Psalter.

INDEX OF FIRST LINES.

Psalms.

All people that on earth do dwell
As pants the hart for cooling streams
Be bounteous to Thy servant, Lord
Bless God, my soul; Thou Lord alone
Blot out my crying sins

Come, praise the Lord; come, praise Him
Earth, with all thy thousand voices

Erect your heads, eternal gates

[blocks in formation]

From lowest depths of woe

God is my light, I will not fear

God is our refuge in distress

God, to whom all hearts are known

[blocks in formation]

In Thee, O Lord, I trust

Have mercy, Lord, on me

How long wilt thou forget me, Lord.

How shall the young preserve their ways

I lift my heart to Thee.

I strive each action to approve

In Thee I put my stedfast trust
It is a thing both good and meet..
Joy and blessing wait on praise
Let all the just, to God, with joy
Lord, keep me, for I trust in Thee..
Lord, in Thy wrath reprove me not
Lord, let me know my term of days
Lord of the worlds above ....

My heart its noblest theme has found
My hiding-place, my refuge tower
My Shepherd is the living Lord
My soul, praise the Lord

My soul, in silence, waits on God
No change of times shall ever shock
O come, loud anthems let us sing
O God, my gracious God, to Thee
O God, my heart is fixed, 'tis bent..
O God, my heart is fully bent
O God, my strength and fortitude
O God, Thou art my God alone

[blocks in formation]

O God of hosts, the mighty Lord

O render thanks, and bless the Lord..
O Thou to whom all creatures bow
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven.
Praise the Lord with glad thanksgiving
Praise the Lord, my soul, in praising..
Praise the Lord, ye heavens adore Him.
Praise the Lord enthroned on high
Raise the psalm! let earth's adoring
Raise the psalm to God all glorious...
Sing to the Lord a new made song.
Sons of men, with adoration...
The heavens declare Thy glory, Lord
The Lord my pasture shall prepare
The Lord is kind and merciful
The mercies of the eternal Lord
The spacious firmament on high..
Thee I'll extol, my God, my King

There is a way where blessing meets..
Thou, gracious God, art my defence
Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious

[blocks in formation]

Thou, Lord, by strictest search hast known..
Through all the changing scenes of life

[blocks in formation]

Thy mercies manifold

Thy word is to my feet a lamp.

Day of days, that day of fear

Day of wrath, O day of mourning.
Dread Jehovah, God of nations
Easter day is come at last.....
Eastward and west the Saviour spread
Ere the golden sun's arising....
Eternal God, we look to Thee...
Father, again in Jesu's name we meet
Father, 'tis Thine each day to yield
Father of all, whose powerful voice
Father of heaven, whose love profound
Father, whate'er of earthly bliss.
Father, who the light this day..
For Thy mercy and Thy grace...
Forth from the dark and stormy sky.
Fountain of mercy, God of love
From all that dwell below the skies
From Greenland's icy mountains...
From highest heaven the Father's Son
Give to our God immortal praise..
Glory be to God on high.
Glory to Thee, O Lord...

Glory to Thee, my God, this night
Glory, praise, and honour be.....
Glorious things of Thee are spoken
Go to dark Gethsemane.

God moves in a mysterious way
God of our life to Thee we call

God, the Lord, has heard our prayer..
God, who once in righteous vengeance
Great God, as seasons disappear..
Great God, we sing that mighty hand
Great God, what do I see and hear..
Great Mover of all hearts, whose hand

Great Shepherd of Thy people, hear...

Guide us, O Thou great Jehovah

Hail, holy, holy, holy, Lord.....

Hail, the day that sees Him rise.

Hail to the Lord's anointed..

Hallelujah! best and sweetest
Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding

Hark! the glad sound, the Saviour comes.

Hark! the herald angels sing

Hark! the song of Jubilee.
