MATERIAL PURCHASE SPECIFICATIONS

MICA-MUSCOVITE BLOCK, GOOD STAINED AND BETTER

1. Description

This specification covers muscovite ruby block mica of Qualities and Grades listed below.

The Qualities covered by this specification are: (a) Clear and slightly stained; (b) Fair Stained; (c) Good Stained.

The Grades (sizes) covered by this specification, and applicable to each Quality, are: No. 6; No. 5%; No. 5; No. 4; No. 3; No. 2; No. 1; Special; Extra Specials Extra Extra Special; Over Extra Extra Special; Over Over Extra Extra Special 2. Quality and grade requirements

All block mica purchased against any of the above classifications shall conform as to Quality, to the standards established by the American Society for Testing Materials in its Specification D-351-38.

The Grades indicated in Paragraph 1 are defined as follows:

All mica shall be packed in wooden boxes of such construction as to withstand rough handling. Boxes may be of any size usual with the producer of the mica. The inside of the boxes shall be paper lined and shall be smooth and free of projecting nails or any rough surfaces that might cause damage to the contents Mica shall be tightly compressed in the boxes so as to prevent damage from shifting. Each box shall be plainly marked on one end with contractor's serial number and description of contents. Net and gross weights shall be marked on one side of each box. One end of the box shall be free of marks.

4. Inspection

Each lot of mica shall be subject to inspection by an inspector of the U. S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Federal Supply, at the expense of the Govern ment.

When inspection results in failure of mica to meet standards for the Quality of Grade against which offered, the mica may be reclassified to its proper Quality or Grade as above defined. It then may be purchased against its proper classification, provided the purchaser's quota for such classification is not already filled, but otherwise shall be rejected.

This specification covers muscovite ruby film mica of Qualities, Grades and hicknesses listed below.

The Qualities covered by this specification are First Quality and Second Quality.

The Grades covered by this specification, and applicable to each Quality and Grade, are:

0.00125-inch to 0.002-inch

0.002-inch to 0.003-inch

0.003-inch to 0.004-inch

Quality and grade requirements

All films shall have clean-cut edges without cracks and holes, and shall be ree from scales, excessive open edges, or partial laminations. The Grades indicated in Paragraph 1 are defined as follows:

First Quality films shall be of such quality as would result from the splitting of Fair Stained block (as established by the A. S. T. M. Specification D-351-38). Second Quality films shall be of such quality as would result from the splitting of Good Stained block (as established by the A. S. T. M. Specification D-351-38). Nonruby films are not acceptable.

3. Packaging

All film mica shall be securely wrapped in paper packages of equal weight, not to exceed 5 pounds, tied with cord in such a manner as to prevent shifting and damage to the edges of the films.

The packages shall be packed in wooden boxes of such construction as to withstand rough handling. Boxes may be of any size usual with the producer of the films. The inside of the boxes shall be paper-lined and shall be smooth and free of projecting nails or any rough surfaces that might cause damage to the contents. The packages shall be tightly compressed in the boxes so as to prevent damage from shifting. No box shall contain a mixture of Qualities, Grades or Thickness Ranges.

4. Inspection

Each lot of film mica shall be subject to inspection by an inspector of the U. S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Federal Supply, at the expense of the Government.

When inspection results in failure of mica to meet standards for the Quality, Grade, or Thickness Range against which offered, the films may be reclassified

to the proper Quality, Grade, or Thickness Range above defined. The films may then be purchased against its proper classification, provided the purchaser's quota for such classification is not already filled, but otherwise shall be rejected.

This specification covers muscovite mica splittings of Qualities and Grades listed below:

All material purchased against any of the above classifications shall conform, as to Quality and Grade, to the standards established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (Publ. No. 46-117).

Both ruby and light green splittings are acceptable. However, all offers shall stipulate whether ruby or light green splittings will be supplied and the material delivered shall so comply.

3. Packaging

All Book Form Muscovite Splittings shall be securely wrapped in paper packages of equal weight, not to exceed 5 pounds, tied with cord in such a manner as to prevent shifting and damage to the edges of the splittings. The packages of Book Form Splittings, and other Splittings, shall be packed in wooden boxes of such construction as to withstand rough handling. Boxes may be of any size usual with the producer of the splittings. The inside of the boxes shall be paper lined and shall be smooth and free of projecting nails or any rough surfaces that might cause damage to the contents. The mica shall be tightly compressed in the boxes so as to prevent damage from shifting. Each box shall be plainly marked on one end with the contractor's serial number and full description of contents, including Quality, Grade and Color. Net and gross weights shall be marked on one side of each box. One end of the box shall be free of marks. No box shall contain a mixture of Qualities, Grades or Colors.

4. Inspection

Each lot of splittings shall be subject to inspection by an Inspector of the U. S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Federal Supply, at the expense of the Govern ment.

When inspection results in failure of splittings to meet standards for the Quality, Grade or Color against which offered, the splittings may be reclassified to the proper Quality, Grade or Color. They may then be purchased against the proper classification, provided the purchaser's quota for such classification is not already filled, but otherwise shall be rejected.

This specification covers phlogopite mica splittings for Qualities and Grades isted below:

All material purchased against any of the above classifications shall conform, is to Quality and Grade, to the standards established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (Publ. No. 46-117). Phlogopite splittings purchased is "High-Heat" Quality shall be capable of withstanding a temperature of 1400 legrees Fahrenheit without dehydrating and exfoliating.

3. Packaging

All Book Form Phlogopite Splittings shall be securely wrapped in paper packages of equal weight, not to exceed 5 pounds, tied with cord in such a manner as to prevent shifting and damage to the edges of the splittings. The packages of Book Form Splittings and other splittings shall be packed in wooden boxes of such construction as to withstand rough handling. Boxes may be of any size usual with the producer of the splittings. The inside of the boxes shall be paper lined and shall be smooth and free of projecting nails or any rough surfaces that might cause damage to the contents. The mica shall be tightly compressed in the boxes so as to prevent damage from shifting. Each box shall be plainly marked on one end with the contractors' serial number and description of contents. Net and gross weights shall be marked on one side of each box. One end of the box shall be free of marks.

No box shall contain a mixture of Qualities and Grades.

Each lot of splittings shall be subject to inspection by an inspector of the T. S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Federal Supply, at the expense of the Government.

When inspection results in failure of splittings to meet standards for the Quality or Grade against which offered, the splittings may be reclassified to the proper Quality or Grade. They may then be purchased against the proper classification, provided the purchaser's quota for such classification is not already filled, but otherwise shall be rejected.

This specification covers monazite sand suitable for extraction of thorium and other rare-earth metals.

2. Chemical requirements

Each lot of material purchased under this specification shall conform to the following chemical limit:

65.0% minimum

Material shall be subject to inspection and analysis by the purchaser or its designee.

This specification covers electrolytic nickel, nickel ingot and nickel oxide. 2. Chemical and physical requirements

a. Chemical Requirements: Each lot of electrolytic nickel, nickel ingot and nickel oxide shall conform to the applicable chemical limits set forth below:

b. Physical Requirements: Electrolytic nickel shall be in the form of rectangular cathodes, cut or uncut, of any thickness and dimensions usual with the producers, except that all cathodes in a lot shall be of the same nominal dimensions, which nominal dimensions shall be not less than 4 inches by 4 inches, nor greater than 27 inches by 36 inches.

Nickel ingot may be of any size and shape usual with the producer, but all ingots in a lot shall be of the same nominal size and shape. Material shall have a clean surface, free from dirt, slag, or other foreign materials.

No particle size requirements shall apply to nickel oxide.

3. Packaging

Electrolytic nickel cathodes and nickel ingot may be supplied loose or may be packed in any standard type containers. Containers may be of any type usual with the producer, but all containers comprising a given lot shall be of the same nominal size and shape.

Nickel oxide shall be supplied in steel containers. The containers may be of any type usual with the producer but shall be standardized with respect to the contained nickel plus cobalt such that the contained nickel plus cobalt shall be a multiple of ten pounds. All containers comprising a given lot shall be of the same nominal size and shape.

4. Inspection and analysis

Each lot of electrolytic nickel, nickel ingot, or nickel oxide shall be subject to sampling, inspection, and analysis by the purchaser or its designee. Methods of sampling and analysis shall be those prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials.
