It is not clear what is meant; it may be an allusion to the position of Joseph, or, more likely, we should combine it with what follows and refer it to the deliverance, when the Israelites were exalted in triumph over Pharaoh.

18. Suffered he their manners. The MSS. give two readings here. Most read as A.V. and R.V., but three important uncials read “ bare he them as a nursing father (see R.V. margin).

19-20. R.V., In the land of Canaan, he gave them their land for an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years : and after these things he gave them judges. This reading makes the period mentioned count from the going down into Egypt to the judges.

21. R.V., They asked for a king. The mention of Saul is singular: the speaker was himself Saul of Benjamin; but the contrast is

The Greek word, may be translated Bartlet (Ce ntury Bible) (found) disposed to eternal life Rackham lays stress on its military sense and renders it “ had marshalled themselves, on the side of life”; it would then stand in contrast to those who were opposing the Apostles.

Region. The word indicates a political division of the province of Galatia. Antioch was the centre of a district, termed in St. Luke's day “regio.” (Consult the Larger Manual of the Acts.)
