PREFACE

THESE prayers are published in the hope that they may be found as useful to others as they have already been in the limited circle wherein they have been long used in manuscript. They are based upon unpublished Family Prayers, which were drawn up for home use by my father, to whose memory they are inscribed.

Thanks are due to the Rev. W. Bright, author of "Ancient Collects," for the kind permission to consult his book. One or two Collects have been taken from it; some few from other sources which are common ground; but for the most part they have not hitherto been published.

The plan of the work is so simple that nothing need be said thereupon. Additions or alterations can easily be made at discretion in prayers which are arranged in Collects: thus the plan gives flexibility, as well as helps to secure the attention of the worshippers. In the Appendix a few Collects have been placed, without, however, any idea of forming a collection for all occasions. The valu
