HAITI. [Corrected to June 1, 1899.] The import duties collected in the custom-houses of Haiti may be paid in foreign money. An additional duty of 10 per cent on the import and tonnage duties is collected on merchandise and vessels of countries which have no consuls or consular agents in the Republic. But this latter duty will not be collected on the merchan. dise and vessels of nations which officially recognize the Government. Charges for weighing are imposed on all imported articles, whatever their designation, which are sold by the pound, quintal, or ton. This charge is about 50 cents per 1,000 pounds. Weighing charges are also imposed upon all provisions, dyewoods, and other products exported from the country, and sold by weight, at the rate of 50 cents per 1,000 pounds. MONEY, Weights, and Measures. Money. The monetary unit of Haiti is the gourde, which is divided into 100 cents; value, 964 cents American currency. Weights.-Quintal equals 100 pounds (about). Measures.-The aune (yard mentioned in the tariff) equals 46.77 inches. The pied (foot mentioned in the tariff) equals 12.78 inches, and is subdivided into 12 pouces (inch mentioned in the tariff) or 144 lignes (lines). Tariff increase in Haiti.-Vice-Consul-General Terres writes from Port au Prince, March 6, 1899, that according to a decree published on February 25, a surtax of 25 per cent is established on all importations from and after March 14, 1899, the proceeds to be applied to the gradual withdrawal of the paper money now in circulation in the Republic.
