Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard. 31 Woe to the bloody city! it is all

Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face; and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. 6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set 7 thee as a gazingstock. HABAKKUK.

11 THE 'burden which Habakkuk the

prophet did see.

2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not 3) save. "Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and look upon perverseness1? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there is' strife, and conten4 tion 'riseth up. Therefore the law is slacked, and judgement doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore judge(5 ment goeth forth perverted'. Behold ye among the nations', and regard, and wonder marvellously: for "I work a work in your days, which ye will not believe though it be told (6 you. For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation; which march through the breadth of the earth', to possess dwelling places (7 that are not theirs. 05They are terrible and dreadful: their judgement and their dignity proceed from them(8 selves. Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen spread themselves: 'yeal, their horsemen come from far; they fly as an eagle that hasteth to Ide(9 vour. They come all of them for violence; their faces are set eagerly! as the east wind; and they gather (10 captives as the sand. 091 Yea, he scoffeth at kings, and princes are a derision' unto him': The derideth' every strong hold; for 'he heapeth up! 11) dust, and taketh' it. 10 Then shall he sweep by as a wind', and shall 11pass over, and be guilty: even he whose 12) might is his god. Holy One? 12we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained him for judgement; and thou, O 18 Rock', hast es13 tablished him for correction. "Thou 'that art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and that' canst not look on 'perverseness', wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy peace when the wicked swalloweth up the man that 14 is more righteous than he; and makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler 15 over them? He taketh' up all of them with the angle, he catcheth' them in 'his' net, and 'gathereth' them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth 16 and is glad. Therefore he sacrificeth unto 'his' net, and 'burneth' incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and 'his' 17) meat 14plenteous. Shall he there

fore empty 'his' net, and not spare to slay the nations continually? 21 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the 15tower, and will look forth to see what he will 'speak 16with! me, and what I shall answer 'concern2 ing my complaint'. And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, 3) that he may run that readeth it. °For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it 17hasteth toward the end, and shall not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely 4 come, it will not 'delay'. Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath sancti8 fied his guests.
