of shall be polluted: for their bread Ishall be for their appetite; it shall not come into the house of the LORD. 5)°What will ye do in the day 'of' sol

emn assembly, and in the day of the 6) feast of the LORD? °For, lo, they are gone away from destruction, yet Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them: *7 thorns shall be in their tents. The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it the prophet is a fool, the man that hath the spirit is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and because the enmity is great. (8)°Ephraim was a watchman with

my God as for the prophet, a fowler's snare is in all his ways, and enmity in the house of his God. (9 They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: he will remember their iniquity, he will 10 visit their sins. I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first season: but they came! to Baal-peor, and consecrated' themselves unto the shameful thing', and became abominable like that which

11 they loved. As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird: 'there shall be no birth, and none with (12) child', and 'no' conception. Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there be not a man left: yea, woe also to them when I 13 depart from them! Ephraim, like

as I have seen Tyre', is planted in a pleasant place but Ephraim shall bring out his children to the 'slayer'. 14 Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb 15 and dry breasts. All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them because of the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house: I will love them no more; all their princes are revolters. (16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit : yea,

though they bring forth, yet will I slay 17 the beloved fruit of their womb. My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

10*1 Israel is a luxuriant vine, which putteth' forth his fruit: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath Imultiplied his altars; according to the goodness of his land they have 2 made goodly pillars. Their heart is divided; now shall they be found

guilty he shall smite their altars, 3) he shall spoil their pillars. Surelyi now shall they say, We have no king: Ifor we fear not the LORD; and the king, what can hel do for us? 4 They speak vain words, swearing falsely in making covenants: thereforel judgement 10springeth up as 11hemlock in the furrows of the field. 5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and 12the priests thereof that rejoiced lover it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. 6) It also shall be carried unto Assyria for a present to 18king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall (1 be ashamed of his own counsel. 11As for Samaria, her king is cut off, as 815foam upon the water. The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us. 9)°O Israel, thou hast sinned 16from the days of Gibeah: "there they stood; 18 that the battle against the children of iniquity 'should not overtake them 10 in Gibeah. When it is my desire, I Iwill chastise them; and the 'peoples' shall be gathered against them, when they are 19bound 20to their two (11 transgressions!. And Ephraim is 'an' heifer that is taught, 'that loveth to tread out the corn; but I have passed over upon her fair neck: I will set a rider on' Ephraim; Judah

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. 13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: for thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty 14 men. When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of 2 Egypt. As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto the Baalim, and burned' incense to 3 graven images. Yet I taught Ephraim to go; I took them on my arms; but they knew not that I healed 4 them. I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love; and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat 'before' 5 them. He shall not return into the land of Egypt; but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to 6 return. JOEL.

THE word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. (2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in the days 3 of your fathers? Tell ye your chil dren of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children an4 other generation. That which the

palmerworm hath left hath 'the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left 5 hath the caterpiller eaten. Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the Isweet wine; for it is cut off from your 6 mouth. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; This teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the 'jawi teeth of a great lion. 7 He hath laid my vine waste, and 2barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white. 8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9 The meal offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD'S 10 ministers, mourn. The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up, the (11 oil languisheth. Be ashamed, O ye husbandmen, howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; 'for the harvest of the field is perished. 12 The vine is withered', and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is withered away from the sons of men. 13 °Gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament, ye priests; howl, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the 'meal offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house (14 of your God. and all the inhabitants of the land Junto the house of the LORD your (15 God, and cry unto the LORD. Alas

for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as destruction from 16 7the Almighty shall it come. Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of 17 our God? The seeds rot under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for 18 the corn is withered. How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are 19 made desolate. O LORD, to thee 'do'

I cry: for the fire hath devoured the 10pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned' all the trees of 20 the field. Yea', the beasts of the field 'pant' unto thee: for the water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the 10pastures of the wilderness.

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble for the day of the LORD (2 cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as the 'dawn' spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong, there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after 'them, even to the years 3 of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and 4 none hath escaped them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as "horsemen, so 'dol 5 they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the' mountains 'do' they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong 6 people set in battle array.
