JOHN CARMODY

John Carmody, the president of the Bar Association of North Dakota, was born January 6, 1854, on a farm in the town of Granville, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin. He lived on this farm until he was fourteen years of age, when he moved with his parents to a farm in Waseca county, Minnesota. Mr. Carmody received his early education in the public schools and in the high schools of Waseca and Faribault. After completing his courses in these institutions he taught school for several years. He then entered the law office of Hon. James E. Child, at Waseca, Minn., and after several years of study was admitted to the bar in March, 1880. During the next five years he practiced law in Waseca, and in August, 1885, moved to Hillsboro, N. D., where he has since resided.

While a resident of Waseca, he served five years as city justice and about three months as judge of the municipal court, a position which he resigned when he came to Hillsboro. Upon coming to Hillsboro, he at once entered upon the practice of his profession and soon became one of the strongest members of the North Dakota bar. Mr. Carmody has served as mayor of the eity one term, as state's attorney one term and as city attorney for fourteen years. He has been a member of the volunteer firemen's association at Waseca and at Hillsboro and has served one term as president of the North Dakota Firemen's association. For several years he was a member of the executive committee of the bar association and served as vice president of that association for the two years preceding September 18, 1906. On the latter date he was elected president of the Bar Association of North Dakota.

Mr. Carmody was married July 12, 1886, to Miss Anna Madden of Waseca and is the father of three children, two girls and one boy; the boy, the youngest, is thirteen years old.

In politics Mr. Carmody was always a staunch democrat, and has frequently been honored by important positions on the ticket of that party. In all the positions of trust to which Mr. Carmody has been elected or appointed, he has always shown the highest ability and the most absolute honesty and integrity. As a lawyer he has an extensive practice and is known as one of the most successful advocates in North Dakota.

He is essentially a self-made man and by his own dauntless courage and ability has fought his way, under adverse circumstances, from the bottom to the high position he new occupies. Honest and kind, sympathetic and courageous, ever placing duty and honor above pecuniary gain and with a high regard for the dignity of the law, Mr. Carmody is one who is an honor to his profession and of the greatest value to the community in which he resides.
