FORM 29. (Bi-monthly report on infantry-equipments.)

To be filled out and forwarded to the Chief of Ordnance, Washington, D. C., at the end of February, April, June, August, October, and December, as per section 1220 Revised Statutes; and General Orders, No. 92, W. D., A. G. O., 1874.]

ORDNANCE OFFICE, War DEPARTMENT,

Washington, D. C., January, 1876.

That the experience of the Army may be availed of in perfecting the new equipments, (see Ordnance Memoranda, No. 19,) it is requested that all officers commanding companies to whom the equipments may be issued will make out reports upon the subjoined form and forward them to the "Chief of Ord. nance, U. S. A.," at Washington, D. C.

If not convenient (during any quarter) to drill or march the whole company completely equipped, it is desirable that the experience of a few men, of good judgment, after marches of some length, or severe drills, should be reported. The views and suggestions of officers, founded on their experience with the equipments, are earnestly requested.

2. When were they first received?

3. Have you used the full set on marches, and to what extent since last report ?

(State number of days' continuous use, and longest day's march by company or large detachment.)

4. Has the full set been used by the company at drills and in rapid movements, testing the comparative convenience of carriage, or the interference of any part of the equipment with steady movement of men in ranks ?

(State your opinion regarding these particulars.)

5. Has any important defect been noticed in the quality of workmanship or material? If so, describe it.

6. Do you find that the rubber flaps become sticky or pasty? If so, does this occur when in use, or only when kept in a hot place, close packed?

7. How do you find other articles of the equipment to suit for service? (Mention particulars clearly, if any remarks are deemed necessary.)

2. Give any general suggestions you may desire.
