We are specially indebted, in the preparation of this volume, to the writings of Messrs. Deming, Coppee, Headley, Badeau, Larke, and John Russell Young; also to the press and friends. It is perhaps quite true that Géneral Grant has received more homage from the civilized world than any other man in the world's history. These Stories and Sketches, and we may add, Speeches, constitute, in fact, a very readable and exhaustive sketch-life of the world-renowned General. With a desire to disseminate and perpetuate what is good and noble is the r- ly great, the volume is submitted.
