Practically the imports and exports given in the following tables are the same as those sometimes designated as imports for home consumption, and exports of domestic and foreign produce. That it is not exactly the same, however, may be seen in the case of cotton, where cotton imported apparently for domestic consumption is afterwards. reëxported. In presenting the tables the production for Austria and Hungary is given separately for each year, and the aggregate production is presented with the imports and exports of the same product for the whole Empire. In the case of wheat there seems to have been little change in the Austrian crop during the period from 1880 to 1890, but in Hungary there is a material increase in both acreage and production. During the first three years of the decade, 1880 to 1882, inclusive, the imports and exports of this grain were closely balanced, while in the six years, 1880 to 1885, inclusive, there was only an excess of 5,000,000 bushels in favor of exportation. Beginning with 1886, however, the Empire becomes quite largely an exporting country, imports rapidly declining to insignificant figures with a considerable advance in exportation. In the production of corn the Empire takes second rank in production among the countries of the world, with an annual average for the past ten years of not quite 110,000,000 bushels. The acreage and production seem to be practically stationary, although the domestic production is not sufficient for the demands for home consumption. In the earlier years of the decade the net importation ranged from 4,000,000 to 10,000,000 bushels, but in later years the net supply from outside sources has been smaller. The area of barley varies but little from year to year, production fluctuating according to the season. The foreign shipments of barley in the grain are larger in proportion to production than in the case of any other cereal, the average net exportation for ten years being more than 13,000,000 bushels. The large production of potatoes averaging more than 400,000,000 bushels per annum does not suffice entirely for home consumption, there being a slight balance in favor of importation in the trade of this product. The production of tobacco in Austria fluctuates from year to year, but in Hungary a practically continual decrease in area appears from year to year, indicating a steady decline in the industry. In the trade figures there appears an annual balance in favor of imports, amounting to about 17,000,000 pounds. The official reports state clearly that the figures here presented relate to raw tobacco only, it being specif ically given as unworked leaves, ribs, stems, and blossoms. Tobacco extract appears to be included whenever imported. The weights given are gross weights. In the matter of dairy products no estimates of production for butter or cheese are available for Hungary. The figures presented for Austria come from the statistical year book of the Ministry of Agri culture and cover only four years. The identity of the figures for 1883 with those for 1882 indicate that the estimates are arbitrarily made and not the result of any special computation. In 1880 and 1881 the figures on butter are stated to include suet, and for the years 1882 and 1887, inclusive, both suet and artificial butter are included. As artificial butter is not mentioned elsewhere in the earlier reports, it is more than probable that during the whole period it has been included in the imports of butter. The statement of wool production in Austria is from the source above mentioned in connection with dairy products. No figures for Hungary are attainable. In the trade in wool the Empire appears as an importing country, the average balance in favor of imports for ten years amounting to more than 22,000,000 pounds. These statements include not only raw wool, but washed, combed, bleached, milled, dyed, and waste wool and shoddy. In the statement for the last three years the list of items mentioned as included in wool is longer than those for earlier years, and includes, in addition to those mentioned, hair or fur of several animals besides sheep; but these, though not expressly mentioned, are probably included in the figures presented earlier, as they are not found under any other headings for those years. The figures for cotton include not only raw cotton, but carded, milled, bleached, waste, and cotton batting, with silk and wool batting also for the year 1881. If the two latter items are included for later years it is without being specifically mentioned. In 1888 and 1890 dyed cotton is also included. The statement for flour includes flour of all grains, and a small quantity made from rice and leguminous seeds. The prominence of the Empire as a milling center is reflected in the export trade in flour, the average shipments amounting to 350,000,000 pounds. This represents a shipment of grain in the form of flour very much larger than the aggregate shipment of grain itself. 4, 119, 165 1,941, 635 3,087, 479 2, 176, 176 1,048, 472 870, 969 4,868, 898 3,686, 193 303, 711 268, 259 3,474, 772 2, 198, 630 285, 252 224, 580 2,983, 135 1,615, 391 55, 343 38,710 2,730, 988 1,567, 734 43, 155 27,056 103,608 44, 215 223, 877 124.089 RYE. 1880. 4,553, 045 64, 328, 196 1881. 4,629, 942 1882. 4,737, 080 1883. 4,737, 080 80, 005, 611 2,682, 216 34, 441, 555 50, 467, 511 2,714, 853 40, 111, 377 1884. 4,896, 857 76, 551, 267 2,729, 430 42, 951, 706 7,626, 287 108,007, 134 7, 235, 261 98,769, 751 2,542, 616 1885. 4,932, 445 79, 119, 970 2,794, 825 41, 709, 675 7,727,270 120, 829, 645 1886. 4,970, 043 76, 436, 518 2,778, 600 37, 425, 652 7,748, 643 113, 862, 170 1887. 1888. 4. 969, 584 1889. 1890. 4,875, 896 91, 031, 114 2,773, 722 51, 295, 798 7,743, 306 732,308 42, 195, 395 7,711, 452 36, 789, 694 7,549, 748 82, 426 50, 179, 860 7,623, 937 142, 326, 912 SPELT.
