ISLANDS OF THE SEA. BRITISH POSSESSIONS. The only British colony classed among islands of the sea is Fiji. The data presented in the following statement, as in the case of other British colonies, is derived from the British official publication, Colonial and other Possessions of the United Kingdom, parts 17, 18, and 19. It would appear that comparatively little corn is raised now, and the decline in production is reflected in the decline in the export trade in that product. From 1882 to 1887 the exports of corn are given in bags, but no equivalent in bushels is at hand. In the case of wool the figures presented seem to indicate that the production is about stationary. It should be understood in all cases that the statements of production are intended to include only the production on plantations owned or managed by other than native holders. Tobacco-production. The French Possessions classed as islands of the sea include New Caledonia and Tahiti. The data, as in the case of all other French colonies, is drawn from Statistiques Coloniales, and its unsatisfactory character has been commented upon in the introduction to the French Possessions in Asia. |
