PREFACE.

IN submitting to her subscribers the second volume of "The Rebellion in the United States," the authoress begs leave to say that her "fears and anxieties" are in a measure allayed, that the work has passed through the ordeal of criticism by the 'press' and the people favorably, and the sale of it has exceeded her most sanguine expectations.

In this volume, as well as in the preceding one, the authoress has endeavored to deal justly with all, to applaud a good deed wherever found, whether in our rebellious kindred, south of Mason and Dixon's line, or among our own loyal brotherhood, amid the rocks and glens, the beautiful valleys, and flourishing villages of New England, or the sturdy and chivalrous sons of the far distant West, and at the same time equally to censure wrongdoings in all.

The subscribers to this work can rely fully upon the authenticity of all matter contained in this History, as it has been procured from the most reliable sources,
