CROIX RÍVER (WISCONSIN AND MINNESOTA) The St. Croix River has its source in northwestern Wisconsin and flows southwesterly 164 miles to the Mississippi River, 41.7 miles below Minneapolis. The lower 127 miles forms the boundary between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The present project provides for a 9-foot depth from the mouth of the river to Stillwater (24.5 miles), and a 3-foot depth from Stillwater to Taylor Falls, mile 52.3. From the mouth to Stillwater, the reach known as Lake St. Croix, the water is generally from 20 to 35 feet deep. From Stillwater to Taylors Falls the river is narrow, with a controlling depth of 1 foot at extreme low water. At Taylors Falls, navigation is obstructed by rapids and a power dam without a lock. Above Taylors Falls the depths are sufficient only for canoes and very small boats. Chart No. 1 AERIAL CABLE CROSSING (see p. 286) _ Clearances: 65.4 feet above pool; 53.1 feet above 1881 high water.
