Duplex Spring and Catenary Movement.

[graphic]

PATENTED MARCH 23, 1858, AND MARCH 6, 1860.

[ocr errors]

This Gauge embodies two new improve ments, which render it superior to any other now in use. One of these is the Catenary Movement, which dispenses with the Seg ment, or Rack and Pinion Gearing common to all Moving Pointer Gauges, which is a fruitful source of error, requiring frequent repairs.

By the Catenary Movement, smoothness and accuracy of motion is imparted to the Index Pointer throughout its entire range, and the lost motion, usual in gearing, consequent upon wear of parts, avoided. The other improvement consists in the employ ment of an Elastic Duplex Resisting Spring, combined with an Elastic Diaphragm, which through a Coiled Spring, acting as a seat or grating for the Diaphragm, operates the rod which actuates the indicating mechanism. By the duplex construction of the Resisting Spring that uniformity of temper and fineness of quality are obtained which are indispensable to accuracy of indication, and the chief resistance to pressure being in this Spring, the Coiled Spring is only required to act in that function to which it is best adapted, viz: to form a yielding seat or grating for the Elastic Diaphragm.
