ND it came to país, that after we were gotten from them, and had lanched, we came with a ftraight courfe into Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara. 2. And finding a fhip failing over, unto Phenicia, we went aboard, and fet forth. 3. Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and failed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the hip was to unlade her burden. 4. And finding difciples, we tarried there feven days: who faid to Paul through the (1) Spirit, that he fhould not go up to Jerufalem. 5.And when we had accomplished thofe days, we departed, and went our way, and they all brought us on our way, with wives and ǹ kneeled, children, till we were out of the city and we down on the fhore, and prayed. 6. And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took fhip; and they returned home again, 7. And when we had finished our courfe from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and faluted the brethren, and abode with them one day. 8. And the next day we that were of Pauls company, departed, and came unto Ce-, farea; and we entred into the house of Philip the * Evangelift, (which was one of the feven) and abode with him." 9. And the fame man had four daughters, virgins, which. did prophefie. 10. And as we tarried there many days,. there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

mtActs 11. 28. There ftood up one of them, named Agabus, and fignified by the Spirit, that there fhould be great Dearth throughout all the World.

(1) Had the Spirit here forbid the Apoftle to go up to Jerufalem, we have no Reafon to think he would have difobeyed him. The moft probable Senfe therefore, taking the whole Paffage together, feems to be; That the Spirit foretold, how he fhould be treated by the Jews if he went up thither, leaving him to his own liberty to go, or not to go. Whereupon thofe with him, Ver 12. diffuaded him from going. But fuch was the Zeal of the Apoftle to propagate the Gospel of Christ, that even the certain Prospect of Sufferings did not deter him from go. ing thither. To their Diffuafives therefore he thus answered, Ver. 13. What mean ye to weep? &...

And when he was come unto us, he took Pals girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and faid, Th faith the holy Ghoft, So fhall the Jews at Jerufalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and fhall deliver him inte the hands of the Gentiles. 12. And when we heard the things, both we and they of that place, befought him to go up to Jerufalem. 13. Then Paul anfwered, w mean ye to weep, and to break mine heart? for lam's dy not to be bound only, but alfo to die at Jerufalem for name of the Lord Jefus. 14. And when he would no perfwaded, we ceafed, faying, The will of the Lord be done. 15. And after thofe days we took up our carriages and went up to Jerufalem. 16. There went with us alo certain of the difciples of Cefarea, and brought with them one Mnafon of Cyprus, an old difciple, with whom we should lodge. 17. And when we were come to Jerufalem, the brethren received us gladly. 18. And the day follow ing Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were prefent. 19. And when he had faluted them, he de clared particularly what things God had wrought among Gentiles by his miniftry. 20. And when they heard,th glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou feeft, brothe how many thousands of Jews there are which believe, and they are all zealous of the law. 21. And they are inform ed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles, to forfake Mofes, faying, that they ought not to circumcife their children, neither to walk after the ftoms. 22. As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they obferve no fuch thing, fave only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication. 26. Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them, " entred into the temple, to fignifie the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering fhould be offered for every one of them. 27. And when the feven days were almoft ended, the Jews which were of Afia, when they faw him in the temple, ftirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, 28. (For they had feen before with him in the city, Trophimus an Ephefian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30. And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were fhut. 31. And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerufalem was in an uprore. 32. Who immediately took foldiers, and centurions, and ran down unto them and when they faw the chief captain, and the foldiers, they left beating of Paul, 33. Then the chief сар
