CHA P. V.

ND it came to pafs, that as the People preffed upon him to hear the Word of God, he ftood by the lake of Gennefareth. 2. And faw two fhips ftanding by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3. And he entred into one of the fhips, which was Simons, and prayed him that he would thruft out a little from the land: and he fat down, and taught the People out of the fhip. 4. Now when he had left fpeaking, he faid unto Simon, n Lanch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5. And Simon anfwering faid unto him, Mafter, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy Word I will let down the net. 6. And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fifhes; and their net brake. 7. And they beckned unto their partners which were in the other fhip, that they should come and help them. And they came and filled both the fhips, fo that they began to fink. 8. When Simon Peter faw it, he fell down at Jefus knees, faying Depart from me, for I am a finful man, O Lord. 9. For he was aftonifhed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes

ND it came to pafs on the (1) fecond fabbath after the firft, that he went through the corn-fields: and his difciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. 2. And certain of the Pharifees faid unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the fabbath-days? 3. And Jefus anfwering them, faid, Have ye not read fo much as this, what P David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him: 4. (1) The Word here tranflated Prayer, likewife fignifies an House or Place appointed the Jews, and the Oratories and Churches among Chriftians. These were or fet apart for Prayer. Such were the Synagogues among often built in the Fields, and by Rivers, as well as Towns, &c. And it is highly probable that it was into one of thefe Places or Houses of Prayer he fpent in Meditation and Prayer. Dr. Whitby thinks that the Words, dedicated to God, that our Lord went, and continued all Night, which be rendred, where there was by Law or Cuftom, an Oratory, or Houfe of Prayer, 6.16. 13. which we tranflate, Where Prayer was wont to be made, fhould for the Jews and Profelytes.
