In Assembly, April 16th, 1857,

Resolved, (if the senate concur,) That this state will not allow slavery within her borders, in any form, or under any pretence, or for any time however short.

Resolved, (if the senate concur,) That the supreme court of the United States, by reason of a majority of the judges thereof having identified it with a sectional and aggressive party, has impaired the confidence and respect of the people of this state.

Resolved, (if the senate concur,) That the governor of this state be and he is hereby respectfully requested to transmit a copy of these resolutions to the respective governors of the states of this Union.

Senate Chamber, Albany, April 10, 1857.

Resolved, (if the Assembly concur,) That the Secretary of State be authorized to deliver to the Regents of the University as many copies of such parts of the Natural History of this State, not exceeding twenty-five, as he may believe will not interfere with the claims of those who have already become possessors of parts of the work, under the provisions of law, the same to be used in foreign literary exchanges by the Regents for the benefit of the

Resolved, (if the Assembly concur,) That inasmuch as the extension of the Chenango canal to the state line of Pennsylvania to connect with the canals of that state and thereby opening an extensive trade, in the article of coal, with the inhabitants of that state, will make the said Chenango canal a source of revenue to the state, and as such extension is strongly demanded by the consumers of coal in this state, and inasmuch as certain data are desirable respecting the amount of business resources the said extension will bring to our present canals, and the expense of its construction; therefore, the state engineer and surveyor is hereby required to make a full survey of said proposed extension and an estimate of the expense thereof and the probable increase of business on the canals of this state, resulting from such extension, and

report the result of his labors to the next legislature; provided the expense of such survey shall not exceed the sum of five hundred dollars.
