VISITS ABROAD.

In the table next presented the extent to which silk-goods manufacturing employees of foreign birth visit their native countries after specified periods of residence in the United States is shown, by sex, years in the United States, and race.

Of the 3,557 persons included in the preceding table, 19.8 per cent have made one or more visits abroad. The English show the largest and the Russian Hebrew the smallest proportion of their total number as having been abroad since their first arrival in the United States. As the length of residence in the United States increases, so does the proportion having made visits abroad. This is true of each race except the Russian Hebrew and South Italian. Comparing the males and females, it is seen that a larger proportion of the former have made visits abroad. This is probably due to the fact that there are a larger number of single men than women, and further that a man with a family will not make a trip abroad unless he can take at least his wife with him.

In the table next presented the percentage of persons who were within each age group is set forth by sex and by general nativity and race of head of household.

Of 1,245 persons included in the foregoing table, 22.7 per cent are from 30 to 44 years of age, 20.8 per cent are from 20 to 29, and 20.2 per cent are under 6

years of

age.
Seventeen and three-tenths

per cent are from 6 to 13 years of age, 7.3 per cent are from 16 to 19 years of age, and 8.4 per cent are 45 years of age or over, the smallest proportion, or 3.4 per cent, being 14 or 15 years of age. The foreign

born show a larger proportion than the native-born within each specified age group, except 14 and 15 years, 30 to 44 years, and 45 years or over. The Armenian, North Italian, and Polish are the only races showing as high as 50 per cent who are 20 years of age or over.

Of 12,846 employees in this industry who reported, 47.4 per cent are from 14 to 19 years of age, 19.8 per cent are from 20 to 24, 10.1 per cent are from 25 to 29, 6.8 per cent are from 30 to 34, 9.1 per cent are from 35 to 44, 4.8 per cent are from 45 to 54, and 2.1 per cent are 55 years of age or over. In the groups of employees from 25 to 55 years of age or over, the foreign-born employees show the highest percentage, followed, in the order named, by those who are native whites born of native father and those who are of foreign birth. Of the employees who are native-born of foreign father, those whose fathers were born in Russia and Austria-Hungary show by far the highest percentages and those whose fathers were born in Scotland show the lowest, who are from 14 to 19 years

The employees whose fathers were born in Ireland show the highest per cent of persons from 20 to 24 years of age and those whose fathers were born in Switzerland the highest from 25 to 29 years of age, the employees whose fathers were born in Austria-Hungary and Russia show the lowest percentage in these two groups. Of the employees from 30 to 34, those whose fathers were born in Scotland show the highest percentage, and of those from 35 to 44 years of age, those whose fathers were born in Switzerland show the highest, while none of the employees whose fathers were born in Russia appear in the first-named group and none whose fathers were born in Austria-Hungary, Italy, or Russia appear in the second group mentioned. Of the employees who are from 45 to 54

years of age those whose fathers were born in Scotland show the highest percentage, and of the employees who are 55 years of age or over those whose fathers were born in Switzerland show the highest percentage. Of the foreign-born employees, the Poles show the highest percentage who are from 14 to 19 years of age and the Scotch the lowest; the South Italians show the highest percentage and the North Italians the lowest from 20 to 24 years of age; and the Russian Hebrews the highest percentage and the Poles the lowest from 25 to 29 and from 30 to 34 years of age. The North Italians show the highest percentage who are from 35 to 44, the Germans the highest percentage who are from 45 to 54, and the English the highest percentage who are 55 years of age or over; the Poles show the lowest percentage in the first two groups named and the Poles and Russian Hebrews the lowest percentage in the last-named group. The female employees show a considerably higher per cent of persons from 14 to to 24 than do the male employees, while in each of the other age groups the percentage of males is considerably higher than that of the females.
