Messiah's reign.

PSALMS, LXXII.-LXXIV.

PSALM LXXII. A Psalm ẞ for Solomon. GIVE a a the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son. 2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment. 3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. 4 He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. 6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass; as showers that water the earth. 7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

8 Hei shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

10 Them kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

11 Yea, all kings shall fall down" fore him; all nations shall serve him.

PSALM LXXIII.

A Psalm σ of Asaph.

TRULYT God is good to Israel, even

to such as are of a clean heart.

2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my_steps had well nigh slipped.

3 For I was enviousa at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 For there are no bands in their death; but their strength is x firm.

5 They are not in ẞ trouble as other men; neither are they plagued y like other men. 6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

Prosperity of the wicked.

10 Therefore his people return hither; and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the Most High?

12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. 13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency. 14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and y chastened every morning.

15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

23 Nevertheless, I am continually with thee; thou hast holden me by my right hand. 24 Thour shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish; thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.

28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

PSALM LXXIV. Maschil of Asaph.

O GOD, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the Prod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.

5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.

6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.

7 They have cast fire into thy sanctuary; they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.

8 They said in their hearts, Let us & destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.

9 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

To the chief Musician, μ Al-taschith, A Psalm or Song v of Asaph. UNTO thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near, thy wondrous works declare. 2 P When I shall receive the congregation, I will judge uprightly.

4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly; and to the wicked, Lift not up thed horn: 5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south: 7 But God is the judge; he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture, and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them. 9 But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

18 And they tempted God in their heart, by asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness ? 20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and wash wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel; 22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation;

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, 24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

27 Hem rained flesh also upon them as dust, and x feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea;

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

30 They were not estranged from their lust but while their meat was yet in their mouths,

34 When he slew them, then they sought him; and they returned and inquired early after God:

35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues :

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant. 38 But he being full of compassion, forgaves their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath:

39 For he remembered' that they were but flesh; a windm that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! 41 Yea, they turned back, and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the Senemy:

43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders" in the field of Zoan: 44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink. 45 Hey sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labour unto the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost.

48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea σ overwhelmed their enemies.

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided' them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies;

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men; 61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. 62 Her gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

18 So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name. 19 Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.

4 For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt; where I heard a language' that I understood not.

6 I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.' 7 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee: I answered thee in the secret place of thunder; I proved" thee at the waters of x Meribah. Selah.

8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;

9 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

PSALMS, LXXXII.-LXXXV. Pleasures of public worship.

10 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

11 But my people would not hearken to my voice: and Israel would none of me. 12 Sod I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust and they walked in their own counsels.

13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

14 I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.

To the chief Musician upong Gittith,
A Psalm y for the sons of Korah.
How amiable are thy tabernacles, O
LORD of hosts!

2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.

4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee.

5 They know not, neither will they understand: they walk on in darkness: the foundations of the earth are out of course.

6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the Most High: 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

PSALM LXXXIII.

A Song or Psalm p of Asaph. KEEP not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.

2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

4 They have said," Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

5 For they have consulted together with one x consent: they are confederate against thee:

PSALM LXXXV.

To the chief Musician, A Psalm σ for the sons of Korah.

LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.

2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people; thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.

3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.

4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.

5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all

Selah. 9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison;

10 Which perished at En-dor: they became as dung for the earth.

11 Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb; yea, all their princes as Zebahs and as Zalmunna:

12 Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession. 13 O my God, make them like a wheel; ash the stubble before the wind.

14 As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire, 15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.

6 Wilt thou not revive us again, that thy people may rejoice in thee?

7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.

8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
