LESSONS FOR SUNDAY SCHOOLS, SELECTED FROM THE SCRIPTURES, WITH SPELLING EXERCISES PREFIXED, AND A FEW PREFACE. THIS work is formed upon the model of Bishop Gastrell's Christian Institutes; and many of the passages quoted may be found in that excellent compilation. The doctrines and duties of the Christian religion are arranged under distinct heads; by which means they may be more forcibly impressed and readily referred to: and the scholar, by committing them to memory, will be furnished with a store of instruction upon every subject produced. Nor are they thus calculated for children alone; parents also and others may derive from them, in some instances, considerable information. It is recommended that the scholars, before they read a lesson, should first learn the spelling: for thus they will be enabled to read so much more easily and correctly; and if a chapter be found too long for one lesson, it may be conveniently divided, because the spelling words are placed in the order in which they occur below: nor is it requisite to proceed with the chapters exactly as they stand; the more difficult ones, that occur in the ealier part of the book, may be passed over and read last. |
