"Laudari à laudato" has, I suspect, my Lord, lost none of its sweetness since the day that human praise first reached the ear or touched the heart of author. And as that approval which your Lordship bestowed on the former portions of my work has in some measure elicited the present volume, it seems but natural that it should seek to go forth under the same auspices. IT was not the Author's intention to have continued the volumes of "Manna in the House" beyond the four Gospels. Having at the close of that work undertaken a similar Commentary on the Psalms under the title of "Manna in the Heart," it was his purpose to have carried on the work on the same plan through the prophetical writings. The Commentary on the Psalms was, however, brought to a conclusion shortly after the death of the late Rector of Cheam had rendered necessary the Author's resignation of the Curacy of that parish, of which he had had the sole charge for nearly twenty years. The uncertainty of his then position, and the possibility, perhaps the hope, of removal to another sphere of labour were little favourable |
