LATIN.

1835.

To be translated into Latin Prose.

Hannibal, having drawn together his army from all quarters, came into Lucania, to Grumentum, in the hope of regaining the towns which, through fear, had revolted to the Romans. To the same place, the Roman consul, having carefully reconnoitred the roads, hastens from Venusia, and pitches his camp about fifteen hundred paces from the enemy. The rampart of the Carthaginians seemed to be almost close to the walls of Grumentum: half a mile only intervened. A plain lay between the Carthaginian and Roman camps; naked hills overhung the left hand side of the Carthaginians, and the right of the Romans, but suspected by neither party, because they had no woods nor lurking places for ambuscades.

To be translated into English Prose.

LIVY, XXI. 9.
