THE YOUNG MARINER'S GUIDE, OR HINTS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF A SHIP AT SEA, ALSO, INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE STOWAGE OF THE RUDIMENTS OF ASTRONOMY, AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION. CHARLES JOSEPH RICHES, LATE MASTER IN THE MERCHANT SERVICE. TO WHICH IS ADDED, THE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR PASSING THE SECOND EDITION, ENLARGED. 44. Sunderland: THOMAS REED AND COMPANY. LONDON R. GROOMBRIDGE AND SONS; C. WILSON, (LATE NORIE AND CO.); R. H. LAURIE. 1854. [Entered at Stationers' Hall.] 231 9.29. THE following Treatise is the result of experience gained by the Author when navigating ships in many parts of the world. While, on the one hand, it is not intended to supersede any practical experience received by men whose years may have proved such experience; on the other, it may be useful and instructive to the younger portion of the maritime community. Being fully confident that the directions given will prove effectual for the purpose designed, it is laid before the public; and should it in any degree assist the British Mariner in maintaining that supremacy for which he has so long been characterized, the end for which it is written will be attained.
