6 Ora, fratelli, noi vi ordiniamo, nel nome del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, che vi ritiriate da ogni fratello, che cammina disordinatamente, e non secondo l'insegnamento che ha ricevuto da noi;

7 Perciocchè voi stessi sapete come ci conviene imitare; conciossiachè non ci siam portati disordinatamente fra voi;

8 E non abbiam mangiato il pane, ricevutolo da alcuno in dono; ma con fatica, e travaglio, lavorando notte e giorno, per non gravare alcun di voi.

9 Non già che non ne abbiamo la podestà; ma per darvi noi stessi per esempi, acciocchè c' imitiate. 10 Perciocchè ancora, quando eravamo appo voi, vi dinunziavamo questo, che chi non vuol lavorare non mangi.

11 Imperocchè intendiamo che fra voi ve ne sono alcuni che camminan disordinatamente, non facendo opera alcuna, ma occupandosi in cose vane.

12 Or a tali dinunziamo, e gli esortiamo per lo Signor nostro Gesù Cristo che, lavorando quietamente, mangino il pane loro.

6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of

us.

7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you :

9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busy bodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you

all.

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

CHAPTER 1.

an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord.

3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: 80 do.

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for

16 Ma, per questo mi è stata fatta misericordia, acciocchè Gesù Cristo mostrasse in me primieramente tutta la sua clemenza, per essere esempio a coloro che per l'avvenire crederebbero in lui a vita eterna.

17 Or al Re de' secoli, immortale, invisibile, a Dio solo savio, sia onore, e gloria ne' secoli de' secoli. Amen.

18 Io ti raccomando questo comandamento, o figliuol Timoteo, che, secondo le profezie che innanzi sono state di te, tu guerreggi, in virtù d' esse, la buona guerra;

19 Avendo fede, e buona coscienza; la quale avendo alcuni gettata via, han fatto naufragio intorno alle fede;

20 De' quali è Imeneo, ed Alessandro, i quali io ho dati in man di Satana, acciocchè sieno castigati, ed ammaestrati a non bestemmiare.

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away, concerning faith have made shipwreck :

20 Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

CHAPTER 2.

EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men ;

2 For kings, and for all that are

5 Perciocchè v'è un sol Dio, ed anche un sol Mediatore di Dio, e degli uomini, Cristo Gesù uomo ; 6 Il quale ha dato sè stesso per prezzo di riscatto per tutti; secondo la testimonianza riservata a' propri tempi.

7 A che io sono stato costituito banditore, ed apostolo, (io dico verità in Cristo, non mento,) dottor de' Gentili in fede, e verità.

8 Io voglio adunque che gli uomini facciano orazione in ogni luogo, alzando le mani pure, senza ira, e disputazione.

9 Simigliantemente ancora che le donne si adornino d' abito onesto, con verecondia, e modestia; non di trecce, o d'oro, o di perle, o di vestimenti preziosi ;

10 Ma, come si conviene a donne che fan professione di servire a Dio per opere buone.

11 La donna impari con silenzio, in ogni soggezione.

12 Ma io non permetto alla donna d'insegnare, nè d' usare autorità sopra il marito; ma ordino che stia in silenzio.

13 Perciocchè Adamo fu creato il primo, e poi Eva.

14 E Adamo non fu sedotto; ma la donna, essendo stata sedotta, fu in cagion di trasgressione.

15 Ma pure sarà salvata, partorendo figliuoli, se sapranno perseverare in fede, e carità, e santificazione, con onestà.

CAPO 3.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not,) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

CHAPTER 3.

HIS is a true saying, If a man

7 Or conviene ch' egli abbia ancora buona testimonianza da que' di fuori, acciocchè non caggia in vituperio, e nel laccio del diavolo.

8 Parimente bisogna che i diaconi sieno gravi, non doppi in parole, non dati a molto vino, non disonestamente cupidi del guadagno; 9 Che ritengano il misterio della fede in pura coscienza.

10 Or questi ancora sien prima provati, poi servano, se sono irreprensibili.

11 Simigliantemente sieno le lor mogli gravi, non calunniatrici, sobrie, fedeli in ogni cosa.

12 I diaconi sien mariti d' una sola moglie, governando bene i figliuoli, e le proprie famiglie;

13 Perciocchè coloro che avranno ben servito si acquistano un buon grado, e gran libertà nella fede, ch'è in Cristo Gesù.

14 Io ti scrivo queste cose, sperando di venir tosto a te;

15 E, se pur tardo, acciocchè tu sappi come si convien conversar nella casa di Dio, che è la chiesa dell' Iddio vivente, colonna, e sostegno della verità.

16 E, senza veruna contradizione, grande è il misterio della pietà; Iddio è stato manifestato in carne, è stato giustificato in Ispirito, è

4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels,
