25 Or era l'ora di terza, quando lo crocifissero.

26 E la soprascritta del maleficio che gli era apposto era scritta di sopra a lui, in questa maniera: IL RE DE' GIUDEI.

27 Crocifissero ancora con lui due ladroni, l' un dalla sua destra, e l'altro dalla sinistra.

28 E si adempiè la scrittura che dice: Ed egli è stato annoverato fra i malfattori.

29 E coloro che passavano ivi presso l'ingiuriavano, scotendo il capo, e dicendo: Eia, tu che disfai il tempio, e in tre giorni lo riedifichi,

30 Salva te stesso, e scendi giù di

croce.

31 Simigliantemente ancora i principali sacerdoti, con gli scribi, beffandosi, dicevano l' uno all' altro: Egli ha salvati gli altri, e non può salvar sè stesso.

32 Scenda ora giù di croce il Cristo, il Re d' Israele; acciocchè noi lo veggiamo, e crediamo. Coloro ancora ch' erano stati crocifissi con lui l' ingiuriavano.

33 Poi, venuta l' ora sesta, si fecero tenebre per tutta la terra, infino all' ora di nona.

34 E all' ora di nona Gesù gridò con gran voce, dicendo: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabactani; il che, interpretato, vuol dire: Dio mio, Dio mio, perchè mi hai abbandonato ?

35 E alcuni di coloro ch' eran quivi presenti, udito ciò, dicevano: Ecco, egli chiama Elia.

36 É un di loro corse; ed empiuta una spugna d' aceto, e postala intorno ad una canna, gli diè a bere, dicendo: Lasciate; veggiamo se Elia verrà, per trarlo giù.

37 E Gesù, gettato un gran grido, rendè lo spirito.

38 E la cortina del tempio si fendè in due, da cima a fondo.

39 E il centurione, ch' era quivi presente di rincontro a Gesù, veduto che, dopo aver così gridato,

26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

28 And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

36 And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. 37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

38 And the vail of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up

43 Giuseppe, da Arimatea, consigliere onorato, il quale eziandio aspettava il regno di Dio, venne, e preso ardire, entrò da Pilato, e domandò il corpo di Gesù.

44 E Pilato si maravigliò ch' egli fosse già morto. E, chiamato a sè il centurione, gli domandò se era gran tempo ch' egli era morto;

45 E, saputo il fatto dal centurione, donò il corpo a Giuseppe.

46 Ed egli, comperato un panno lino, e tratto Gesù giù di croce, l' involse nel panno, e lo pose in un monumento, ch' era tagliato dentro una roccia; e rotolò una pietra all'apertura del monumento.

40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41 Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him; and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

43 Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

CHAPTER 16.

AND when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

2 And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

4 And when they looked, they

7 Ma andate, e dite a' suoi discepoli ed a Pietro, ch' egli va innanzi a voi in Galilea; quivi lo vedrete, come egli vi ha detto.

8 Ed esse, uscite prontamente, se ne fuggirono dal monumento; perciocchè tremito e spavento l' avea occupate; nè disser nulla ad alcuno; perciocchè aveano paura.

9 Or Gesù, essendo risuscitato la mattina del primo giorno della settimana, apparve prima a Maria Maddalena, della quale avea cacciati sette demoni.

10 Ed ella andò, e l'annunziò a coloro ch' erano stati con lui, i quali facevan cordoglio, e piagne

vano.

11 Ed essi, udito ch' egli viveva, e ch' era stato veduto da lei, nol credettero.

12 Ora, dopo queste cose, apparve in altra forma a due di loro, i quali erano in cammino, andando a' campi.

13 E quelli andarono, e l'annunziarono agli altri; ma quelli ancora non credettero.

14 Ultimamente, apparve agli undici, mentre erano a tavola; e rimproverò loro la loro incredulità, e durezza di cuore; perciocchè non avean creduto a coloro che l' avean veduto risuscitato.

15 Ed egli disse loro: Andate per tutto il mondo, e predicate l' evangelo ad ogni creatura.

16 Chi avrà creduto, e sarà stato battezzato, sarà salvato; ma chi non avrà creduto sarà condannato. 17 Or questi segni accompagneranno coloro che avran creduto: Cacceranno i demoni nel mio nome; parleranno nuovi linguaggi;

5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man, for they were afraid.

9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

9 Di di Erode, re della Giudea,

vi era un certo sacerdote, chiamato per nome Zaccaria, della muta di Abia; e la sua moglie era delle figliuole di Aaronne, e il nome di essa era Elisabetta.

CHAPTER 1.

ORASMUCH as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

5 T Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

HERE was in the days of

6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren; and 137

13 Ma l'angelo gli disse: Non temere, Zaccaria, perciocchè la tua orazione è stata esaudita, ed Elisabetta, tua moglie, ti partorirà un figliuolo, al quale porrai nome Giovanni.

14 Ed egli ti sarà in allegrezza e gioia, e molti si rallegreranno del suo nascimento.

15 Perciocchè egli sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore; e non berrà nè vino, nè cervogia; e sarà ripieno dello Spirito Santo, fin dal ventre di sua madre.

16 E convertirà molti de' figliuoli d' Israele al Signore Iddio loro.

17 E andrà innanzi a lui, nello Spirito e virtù d' Elia, per convertire i cuori de' padri a' figliuoli, e i ribelli alla prudenza de' giusti; per apparecchiare al Signore un popolo ben composto.

18 E Zaccaria disse all' angelo: A che conoscerò io questo? conciossiachè io sia vecchio, e la mia moglie sia bene avanti nell' età.

19 E l'angelo, rispondendo, gli disse: Io son Gabriele, che sto davanti a Dio; e sono stato mandato per parlarti, e annunziarti queste buone novelle.

20 Ed ecco, tu sarai mutolo, e non potrai parlare, infino al giorno che queste cose avverranno; perciocchè tu non hai creduto alle mie

8 And it came to pass, that, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest
