A.D. Diligence. The spiritual harvest. 27 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto John iv. 35-37. 28 The harvest truly is plenteous, but the Matt. ix. 37. labourers are few; pray ye therefore the lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. 29 Gather up the fragments that remain, that John vi. 12. nothing be lost. 29 No man having put his hand to the plough, Luke ix. 62. and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. Wisdom. 19-21. 28 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon Matt. vi. earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. A.D. 29 Gather up the fragments that remain, that John vi. 12. nothing be lost. 16-21. 29 The ground of a certain rich man brought | Luke xii. forth plenteously: and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, Thou fool, this night shall thy soul be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 30 A rich man shall hardly enter into the king- Matt. xix. dom of heaven. 23. 30 How hard is it for them that trust in riches Mark x. 24. to enter into the kingdom of God. 30 There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto Luke xvi. 1-8. A.D. one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said score. Patience. 28 He that endureth to the end shall be saved. 29 If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 30 He that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved. 30 In your patience possess ye your souls. Matt. x. 22. John viii. 31, 32. Matt. xxiv. 13. Luke xxi. 18. Self-denial. Fasting. 28 When ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their Matt. vi. 16-18. A.D. 28 Can ye make the children of the bridechamber Luke v. 34, fast, while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bride- 35. 29 If any man will come after me, let him deny Matt. xvi. himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 24. 26-33. 30 If any man come to me, and hate not his Luke xiv. father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all they that behold it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. 30 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. John xii. 25. VI. WORDS OF OR TO INDIVIDUALS. Where the words addressed to individuals teach some general truth, they are arranged under the general subject rather than the special person, and mostly partly under both; e.g. The New Birth, and Nicodemus. A.D. TO INDIVIDUALS. To John the Baptist. 28 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto John v. 33. the truth. 28 He was a burning and a shining light, and John v. 35. ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. 28 What went ye out into the wilderness to see?
